Hi,

I'm looking to get a trailer next year as my parents are very kindly letting me borrow their land rover for the summer. :)

What trailers are best to avoid?
Do you think I could pick one up for around £1000?

Whatever I buy will be getting a full MOT by a reputable guy before horse goes anywhere near it.

It's for a Highland - 14.2hh and a New Forest - 14.1hh - probably take one or the other for the first 6 months at least :D

Anything I should be aware of?

Get something that does not have a wood floor. there are a lot of Ifor Williams 505 about (I have one to sell too, my horse is to big for it grr) just make sure the floor is sound replacing a wooden floor is very expensive so look for one that has a aliminum floor. You may need slightly more than a gran unless you can afford to buy now as there are a lot of people out there trying to get rid for the winter. its a trailer buyers market at the moment (not so great if you need to sell one though!)

I would think you could get an older trailer with a wooden floor for £1k. The wooden floors do go rotten and need replaced every so often. If you have a friendly mechanic it doesn't cost too much. Or you can get the wooden floor replaced with an alloy one so it just needs to be done once.

The trailers with alloy floors tend to be more expensive - around £2k when I was looking earlier in the year. I paid just over £2k for my IW505. I think you'd be lucky to pick up a decent trailer with an alloy floor for £1k.

Be careful with an older trailer, they are cheap, but they can also be very heavy. If you don't have a B+E license you could fall foul of the law.

Might be worth considering buying over the winter as trailers will be cheaper than right before the show season starts.

If you only have the landrover for the summer have you considered hiring a trailer. Ralph Bailey trailers near Bridgewater hire out various trailers, all very good condition and I believe a friend who was hiring one told me she was paying £16 a week. All trailers come fully serviced etc. Just a thought.... :)

I am afraid that aluminium floors rot as well as the aluminium corrodes due to electrolytic action with the steel cross members.

Thanks for all the replies. will reply properly later as running back out but, I did think of hiring but ideally want to buy one as my youngest has never been loaded so I want to educate her :)

I've also factored money in for doing my B+E so when time comes to buy I *should* have that :)
