Trailer question.... advice please

My friend and I would like to travel our two equines together in the same trailer........ no problem with weights etc but....

My horse is bigger than her pony 15.1 vs 14.1 and hers will only travel on the right..... therefore the larger would have to be on the left.

I know it is correct to have the larger on the right for balance etc but is it essential for safety/legality etc???

It would only be for short normal road journeys and no motorways or fast driving etc.

Opinions please

In spite of the recommendation that larger horses or single horses should always be on the right, mine was always more comfortable on the left, and it made unloading easier too. I was just more careful with cornering and cambers.
 
Yes, sorry, I know the reasoning behind the rules, but wondered if it was as big a problem as perceived.

ie. A horse travelling in a double trailer without a partition would be able, if they wanted, to hug the left hand wall...... therefore unbalancing the trailer........

but would this be worse than two equines which would actually be more balanced as on both sides of the trailer???

My OH changed our disco for a range rover and there is no towbar on it.... to put one on is £1400 and I dont really know if I will use it enough to justify the cost.

If I can convince myself that I will use it then I may either change my car or get a towbar fitted, but cant make that decision until I take him out and about.... catch 22
 
I’m sure you could easily get a tow bar for less than £1400 if you didn’t go through Land Rover themselves.
And yes you have to get out and about!!!!! We need more comp reports!
 
MerlinsQuest, I asked Steve & he said we'll be fine, straight lines are ok, just need to be careful, like no tight cornering at speed, as this wasn't on my special plan of things to do, when it finally stops raining, lets go for a jolly. As for the thing we spoke about earlier, have e-mailed the sj coach with my decision, which is what we discussed. Hope that's not too cryptic for you, call you soon XXX

Bloody hell!

There are lots of indepedent tow bar specialist fitters around who would be able to fit one for 10-20% of that fee. Check your yellow pages.
 
I often travel my mare with a 14 hh pony my mare is 16.1hh and will only travel on the left if another horse is in the trailer ( will travel either side when she travels alone?)
Have always just done it and never had a problem as drive steady with the trailer on anyway.
 
I know - unfortunately though the RR has a number of ECU's which control everything from engine management through to suspension and electrics. When the towbar is fitted the guy at the dealer has to put the car on testbook and configure the main ECU so that the car knows that there's a towbar fitted (for lighting). Just plonking one on can damage the ecu's and cause £000's of damage.

Think the way forward will be a visit to an independent LR/RR specialist ...cheaper than a main dealer but someone who has all the kit.
