Think I know the answer to this already but....

Post 97 licence....can I tow an empty Ifor 510 with a trooper?

I'm thinking not because it goes on what the weight could be and not what the weight actually is....?

No if you have not done your trailer test irrespective of what it can hold. you can as far as i know only tow 750kg and a 510 is about 1100kg.

I think you'd be overweight with that combo, but to know you need to know the MAM weights of both the trailer and car.

The gov site states that with a post 97 normal B cat license your car and trailers MAM cant weigh more than 3500kg combined, and the trailer must weigh less than the unladen weight of the car.

Eg car MAM 1995kg
Trailer MAM- 1200kg

Total- 3195kg = legal.

The extra rules for B licence towing are these....

The vehicle GVW added to the trailer plated MAM must not be more than 3500
The trailer plated MAM must not be more than the vehicle kerb weight

The second rule is currently under review because of the 19/01/2013 changes which omitted to mention it
The DVLA still state that the rule is in force for all B licences
Awaiting reply from my MP/DfT minister for a definition

This means towing an empty trailer is no different than a full one because the MAM remains the same
