looking to buy a trailer and was wondering what the differences between rear-facing and forward-facing are?
and if there are particular benefits of either?

Is it not really just more a personal choice thing? I believe some horses who dont travel well are better rear facing? My friends horse was awful until they traveled him back wards

I believe that there were some studies carried out on which way horses are happier to face during travel. I think it was levels of stress that they monitored, and they found that the horses were happiest rear facing.

Richardson Rear Facing trailers are a boon to large horses as the interior is less claustrophobic for them.

I like them TBH, but you will need something substantial to tow them.

We have a rear facing Richardson supreme excel and I have to say it has been fantastic for our mare who used to fall over or climb the walls in the IW trailer. She was better with the partition removed but since we got the new trailer she has been perfect and always arrives really fresh.
Sadly both horse and trailer are for sale :-(

I personally wouldn't have an IW if it was a gift.

They are noisey, give a dreadful ride and are quite unstable if used without a Bulldog.

The new 506/511 are shocking.

I think i read this in a horsey magazine or something as well, the company that make the small rear facing horseboxes carried out a test. Having said that i wouldnt buy a small box, they seem very fragile and i think they might blow over easily, but it's all down to what is right for you and your horse

I read loads of papers researching the benefits of rear facing travel for a university study (a long time ago!!). Basically, if horses are allowed to travel as they wish they (generally) choose to face the rear at a slight angle. The research showed lower stress levels and reduced heart rates when travelling backwards.
I don't have a rear facing trailer and unfortunately you can't just turn a horse round in a normal trailer because the weight distribution is wrong. I would definately get one if I had the money though!

I love my IW!! Had it 6 years and never a problem, tows like a dream (L200 animal) and horses are happy and arrive fresh. Did think of swapping for an Equitrek and loaned one but I hated it - felt unstable like towing an unruly caravan.

I would try different ones before you buy one!!
