Hoping someone can help with a query about horse recovery when towing a trailer? I broke down on the M4 on Saturday in a friend's lorry (mine is in for plating at the moment) and although it was an absolute pain in the @rse, we were recovered, loaded onto a low loader and taken home with horse still on board and no damage done - all on insurance.

A friend has offered me the use of her trailer until my lorry comes back - but here is my dilemma. Her trailer is not insured. My car is a company car and insured through a group policy at work with full recovery if it breaks down. BUT if I had been on the M4 in my car whilst towing and it had broken down, my company's recovery will not recover my horse - only my car. Does anybody know if I can buy 'standalone' horse recovery for horses in trailers that is not linked to the car or the trailer?

I hope I've explained all that clearly - I'm a bit confuddled myself!

The Organisaton of Horsebox and Trailer Owners will sort out cover for you. I have been a member for years and the service is very good. Be careful with your own horsebox cover - the horses shouldn't be put on a lowloader. OHTO arrange DEFRA authorised horse transport to come and collect your animals in the event of breakdown.

Interesting.......what are people's opinions on this? My horse was fine being on the lowloader tbh - I was a bit of a nervous wreck on the side of the M4, but she coped really well. Why shouldn't horses be put on a low loader? What were my alternatives on Saturday?

Horses should have been transfered to an authorised DEFRA transporter who would have taken them home LEGALLY and safely and within your INSURANCE for your horse!

HH Solicitor had this question posed last year some time and said the implications were insumamountable!

Use Equine Rescue Services!

http://www.equinerescueservices.co.uk/

They will cover you and send out DEFRA authorised horse transporter to take home your horse.
