Can someone explain what a controlled stop is?! Been looking at the trailer test info and it says you dont do an emergency stop but you are expected to do a controlled stop, and I'm guessing thats not stopping at traffic lights or at a junction?! So what is it?!

Also does anyone know if you can take the test with your own trailer and vehicle (and if its any cheaper that way

I'm doing my test next week!! I'll let you know afterwards about the 'controlled stop'

I'm doing the three day course then test. It's almost #500, inc test, but seems worth it - the majority of people fail their test without lessons and at #100+ each time it works out expensive!!! Apparently it's rare to fail with the lessons and test package - pass rate is 95%!

Hi there,
I did my trailer test last year, with my own vehicle but my driving instructors trailer (as I didn't have my own then). This meant I only had to pay to hire the trailer. I would also recommend lessons-my instructor was able to talk me through the whole test and we practiced several times.
If I remember right, the controlled stop was similar to an emergency stop, but you have to be more gentle with the break to take into account the trailer. I had to reach a certain speed then when I reached a painted line on the test site I had to stop quickley, without skidding and with enough control so the trailer didn't jolt against my vehicle. Basically its an emergency stop whilst controlling the trailer. Does that make sense? Sorry if I've confused you more.
All the best for your test next week Kallibear!

ester here, I'm at LizzieJ's house

I did my test in the summer. It is basically just to stop as soon as you can in a controlled manner....... I think there is a cone that you have to get up to speed by (cant remember how fast!) and then another you have to stop by but all done in a controlled space where you do the reversing etc.

The controlled stop exercise is as follows:

The braking exercise takes place off-road on a special manoeuvring area and not on the public roads. During this exercise the examiner will be beside you in the vehicle.
Test Requirement When Braking
The examiner will point out two marker cones approximately 61 metres (200 feet) ahead. You should build up a speed of about 20mph, and when the front of the vehicle passes between the two cones, apply the brakes stopping your vehicle and trailer safely and under full control.
Braking - Do

* Stop the vehicle as quickly as possible.
* Brake under full control of the vehicle.
* Stop the vehicle as safely as possible.
* Stop the vehicle in a straight line.

Braking - Do Not

* Drive to slowly - less than 20mph.
* Brake too soon - anticipate the marker points.
* Brake too harshly causing the vehicle to skid.
* Depress the clutch too late and stall the engine.
* Take too long to stop.

Hope that helps

Argh the controlled stop!

I trained myself and took the towing test in Nov using my own vehicle and horsebox - and only failed on the controlled stop as I panicked about not anticipating the cone, was too heavy footed and let the trailer skid

For me it was done at the test centre 2nd exercise after the reverse exercise
