Trailer test - how tough is it? And other questions!

As I passed my driving test in 1998, I plan to take the trailer test this winter, so I can get out and about with my mare next summer :)

For those that have taken the test, how tough is it? What can I expect? What did you find hardest? And how much did it cost you?

I have never towed before & don't have access to a trailer/vehicle to practise. I'm still saving & unlikely to able to afford to buy a trailer before next spring. Is it going to be impossible without any practice?

Am waiting on my local test centre to call me back, so any info in the meantime would be much appreciated :)
 
I paid around £500 for a 2 day course and the test and I found the training very helpful and I wouldn't have passed without it.

The most nerve wracking bit is reversing - the rest of the test is pretty simple in that the towing itself it straightforward. You just need to be more aware of using your wing mirrors and toning down more general bad driving habits.
 
i paid £25 per hour for lessons, only had about 4 hours worth (but i have towed a light boat before) the main thing is the reversing you have to do a reverse on a kink sot of end up making an s shape back into a marked bay, looks impossible but its fine with practice. the test itself was £105 i think. find your self a good local instructor try yellow pages or on here if other prople know, i'm cleveland based if that helps. also they mark you on you general driving! trying to practice is abit dodgy, L plates on an Ifor Williams horse trailer should get you pulled straight away for being over your 750kg max legal weight.

Have found two places that offer B+E training/test round here, have contacted both for details & prices.

I was wondering about getting any practice, I guess it's not really possible then, unless on private land? That's the other reason I'm holding off buying the trailer til I have the test, as neither my OH or me could legally drive it home :o

Can't wait be able get out and about, will all be worth it in the end! :D
 
Did mine in July. As said before the worst bit is the reversing - not the easiest game to play!

I found a lady who has a Corsa and tiny flatbed to do my test in. She charged me £500 which included 2 full days towing, 1 full day reversing training, 2 hours before the test and the cost of the test.
 
I paid about £ 550- £ 600 - but the company i went with encourage you to share lessons as it works out cheaper for you ..i shared with other half ( not the best of ideas - ended up in competition of who can do it best !! )

My lessons were 4 hours long and i think i had about 4..they were exhausting but i really benifited from it as i was a nervous driver.

Best advise i can give you is tilt your drivers mirror up and start making yourdelf use both car mirrors ..they are so hot on mirrors you get dizzy!!

Dont get stressed about reversing..i was really hung up on this , but there are soo many tips and tricks they show you to make sure you line yourself up right and i managed it perfectly each time and that is a near miracle !! Dont under estimate the road driving especially if you have been driving a long time and got some bad habits..

Best of luck - its amazing feeling once you have passed !! Also, i found the examiners much much more easy going than when you have your driving test - they dont try to catch you out at all. x x
