Hi all, on behalf of a friend. If you're planning on taking your trailer test, is it legal to practice towing on the road (minus horses in the trailer of course) or do you need to book actual lessons to do so?

Also, anyone know how much the test is and what it consists of?

Thanks in advance.

You can tow with L plates on as long as you have someone sitting along side you that is allowed to tow. So either someone who passed their driving test before 1997 or someone that has passed their trailer test.

I did my test quite a few years ago so I'm not sure if it has changed, but at the time I had to:
Answer a few mechanical type questions
Reverse through a dog-leg into a 'parking bay'
Emergency stop
1 hour drive
Coupling/ uncoupling

All B licence holders have a B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence

That means they can tow a B+E combination either loaded or empty providing they adhere to these rules:-
Supervising driver must be age 21+ and held B+E for 3+ years
L plates on front of vehicle and rear of trailer
Correct insurance for B+E learner - check with current insurer

Now good to go :D

====================================================
THE B+E TEST

CAVEAT - I have no connection to any companies seen in the vidoes

No medical or theory test required

Can anyone find a better video of the reverse please?

The B+E test
Read a number plate from a certain distance
Show me/tell me questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
Reverse - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independant drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test

I think the law changed recently - person sitting with you MUST have passed the trailer test.

Incorrect

The new laws which came out in April 2010 did not affect B+E

They did affect supervising drivers for C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E - the supervising drivers of those categories MUST pass the relevant DSA test in order to supervise.

agreed with above plus you can practise with horses in the trailer if you want! I went to competitions/training for years on L plates with supervision.

Passed my test last Friday! :) It's really not that bad :)
