I'm looking to take my trailer test soon but a number of people have told me there is a certain amount of lessons you have to complete before you take the test. I cant find anything on the DVLA website so I'm assuming this isnt the case but just wanted to check I wasnt going to book it and then discover I should've done a load of traning (i've driven it plenty of times anyway!)

It's a bit like a normal driving test; you may have been driving for ages and be a perfectly competant driver, but it's a good idea to have a few lessons in order to make sure you know exactly what is needed to pass the test. I have been towing for a year but have booked a two day course with the test at the end. I did so because I know they ask you questions and you need to reverse/hitch/unhitch etc exactly in the way they want you to in order to pass. It may be a good idea to book an assessment before your test, so you will know whether or not you need training to pass :)

There is no mandatory training before the test, but as Muffinino says it's a good idea to do some, even if you're an experienced trailer driver. The instructor will know what they're looking for, and you can practice the reverse!

This exactly.

Towing the thing is dead easy. It's passing another driving test which is a bummer. They mark you up with all the same minors you would have got when you took your original test so it's well worth having a couple of lessons just to get rid of your 'bad habit's and to practise the show me tell mes and reversing manoeuvre.

OP have sent you a PM, some info I can't spread publically (I dont think) but also:

John Henderson 'Preparing for the towing test' book from Amazon, its only about a fiver, and it's only 23 pages long - but it is worth it. ISBN 0851318800.

Also, check the direct gov. website for the safety questions that you will get asked and make sure you vehicle has towing mirrors (this is essential for the test)

Check that your photocard license is in date, if not, either get a new one asap or take a valid passport with you also.

Thanks folks. Advice much appreciated as always. I will be plonking cones all over our car park and getting some practice in. Although not sure it will solve the fact some days I park in one go and some days it's 20 attempts!!
