I've always had lorries but now I'm paying for this horse malarky myself (not my Dad!!!) I can't afford one. Also, I only have one horse now so I think a trailer would be ideal.

With regards to insurance do you need trailer insurance plus car insurance or can you roll it into one deal? And how often does a trailer need servicing and do you pay tax on a trailer???

Just really wondering what the running costs are?

Thanks

You do need to insure your trailer for theft/damage (I think costs about £120 per year). I have mine rolled into my horse insurance. You need to notify your vehicle insurers that you will be using the vehilce for towing. You will need breakdown cover for both your vehicle and the trailer (the RAC and Equestrian Support Services have a good partnership) in case you break down whilst towing.

You don't need to have a trailer "taxed" in the same way as a car.

As for servicing costs I have NO idea as I've only had my trailer a few months.

as BeckyD says. Plus the costs of having a bigger car to tow with.

Your trailer should come with a handbook detailing the recommended maintenance and servicing requirements, if you get a second hand one without, just phone the manufacturer and they will send you a copy. (IW did for me anyhoo)

Remember you'll also need to take an additional test to tow if you passed your test after 1997.

My car insurance covers me for when im towing it incase i hit someone etc. You have to let them know and and costs a wee bit extra. Also i have it insured for theft with Amtrust.

You dont HAVE to insure your trailer. No tax. With regards to servicing, there is no law saying you need to. However, it is obviously a good idea to get it checked over regularily. We do so about once a year.
