Trailer travelling tips

I have never had to travel a horse before. At the end of the month Murphy will be making the short journey to his new yard - about 30 mins approx.

Can anyone give me any tips/hints advice on what I need to do to prepare? I have already started putting his boots on for a bit every day to get him accustomed to it.

What should I travel him in - lw stable rug or netty cooler? partition in or out of trailer? (bear in mind its not mine so i cant have a fiddle round really)

Complete newbie to this so please help!
 
If you have not towed a trailer before with a horse in it (got that impression but may be wrong), then I would get a trailer and practice. Better to do a guniea pig run without your precious horse in it first...it is not always as easy as it looks!
Has the horse been travelled in a trailer before???
What to travel him in really depends on what he is used to before...some cannot cope with boots etc and if you think he will sweat up, then a cooler woulld be a good thing.
Again the partition very much depends on what he has been used to before and the day of the move is not the time to experiment. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh but these things need to be practiced beforehand if you don't know his travelling history...if you do, then fine, just do what is normal for him.
 
I travel in a fleece cooler (well, not me obviously lol). Even when it feels quite chilly he still gets warm in the trailer, he's not a great traveller though. I use a partition.
 
Hi all

Murphy was delivered from Cheshire to me (south wales...)in a trailer, with nothing on :S... he travelled that 5 hour journey fine and considering it was the end of June he wasnt overly sweaty either... he's a sensible horse so I cannot see why he should be naughty/frightened etc.

I wont be towing him, thank god...

I honestly cannot remember if HE did have the centre partition in or out when he came (put that one down to excitement) He's a 17.1HH MW so maybe he'd like the room more is what Im thinking?...

Im really not sure! I bet the fretting is over nothing but I am taking no chances with not knowing something I should...

You might not have a choice re: partition as depends if trailer ha a full width breastbar or not. Stop worrying, he will be fine and if person who is taking him for you is experienced, they will be able to guide you.

Our hunter was a nightmare in the trailer until we removed the central partition so that she could travel with her legs wide apart! Of course, you can only do this if the trailer you are borrowing has a full width breast bar that you can use instead of the central vertical pole and two short breast bars.
