When you brought a trailer did you put it on your car or horse insurance?

Do I need to notify my car insurance company that I'll be towing now?

Sorry, all a bit new to me!

I insured my trailer separatly, car insurace has nothing to do with it.

I have mine insured with NFU along with horse and car. I had the option of adding it to horse or car insurance and to be honest can't remember which I did I think it is with horse but one worked out quite a bit cheaper than the other so I would definately ask.

Didn't add mine to either, and didn't tell the car company.

Is your trailer not insured then?

I've added mine to NFU insurance. Passed test 17 years ago so think I'm ok on the towing side.....

You don't need to tell you car insurance company that you will be towing anything, so don't worry about that. If you have an accident whilst towing then the trailer is normally covered for damagae from your car insurance anyway (but perhaps check your policy). However, when not connected tot he car it will need its own insurance. We use Equestrian Direct, and their policy is really good value, this will insure you against theft!

Trailer is covered for third party damage only whilst attached to your vehicle - i.e damage you cause to someone else's property while towing. You need to insure it separately ( usually best with your horse insurance) to cover theft and any damage to the trailer itself. Most car insurers will automatically cover towing but it may be wise to check!

I don't have my own trailer but tow someone elses. I checked with them that they had it insured and they didn't and I checked my car insurer to see what would be covered if I had an accident whilst towing their trailer and all it was was 3rd party.
When I get my own trailer I'll insure it separately or with horse.

You can get trailer insurance with the same company as your car insurance often but not always - if you can't, you need to get separate insurance. Cheapest I found recently was Stoneways.
