Well using the towing under 3500kg guidance with my b licence I can tow my ifor williams 403 with a freelander and a pony in. Great! only thing I need to find out is do I need to get the plate on my trailer changed to reflect the weight it will be carrying rather than mam or if I were stopped would it be done on the actual vehicle/trailer combination weight.

Simples either way as can get a new plate off ifor williams for around £10:)

juts wanted to clarify this so rang vosa- who said they werent the people to speak to I should ask the police, so rang the police (north wales) who said I should peak to dvla as they make the rules. So rang dvla girl said she thought I could only tow a trailer if under 750 kg () but I should ring department of transport for confirmation but there was no way I could tow a horse trailer of any size. Finally spoke to department of transport and girl ranted about fact that its a dvla issue and she took my number to get someone from dvla to ring me back!!!:mad::mad:

so how are we the general public supposed to know anything? if each organisation says different things but equally that its nothing to do with them:rolleyes:

argggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh rant over sorry guys!

The Govt organisation who SHOULD know is the DVLA because the licences and what can be done on each is down to them

Sometimes the phrasing of a question is the key to getting the right answer

I now only use the DVLA email contact page to ask a question if I want a definitive answer because they tend to pass those onto the people who do know !!

I know ROG and you are a star but its scary that the guys who will be stopping us dont seem to know what they are doing! what if I get stopped by one of the- you cant tow a trailer bigger than 75okg brigade?

well ive ordered the plate anyways- as you are the oracle ROG any ideas how to unattach the old plate and reattach the new one?

Usually the manufacturer will ask you to go to their nearest dealer to have the plate physically changed when a new plate has been issued
That I strongly recommend doing - it takes then a few mins and job done :D

If stopped by police etc and they think you are illegal then by law they must state the law being broken
If they issue a notice of being prosecuted under a particular law then you have the right to inform the police inspector at the station or the court of what the law is and what your set up was at the time - if you are correct then the CPS will drop it like a hot potato and the officer is likely to be .... re-educated
