When we bought our trailer, our lovely dealer said not to travel with the front top door open as you never know what could fly into the horse's face - wasps etc. However, I often see horses travelling with them open. Opinions very welcome.

No, and I have never seen anyone do it on the roads. I did see someone try to leave the yard like that, but my Dad told them off....

Definitely not :p imagine what it's like for the poor horse :o Can't say I've ever seen it though...

Erm... yes! Ha, my first pony - many moons ago - would only travel with the door open. As a result we had a window made to fit in so that nothing could fly in. The particular pony was always a poor traveler and also had to hjave a custom 1/2 partition to match the plastic window !

I quite often see people doing this around here. I have seen a woman going hunting on a really cold day, driving her car wearing her hat etc whilst her horse had the top door open, with the freezing cold air rushing at its face!!.
They have obviously never even been on a moped as its freezing in the winter and if you get hit in the face by just a fly at 30mph it really hurts, let alone any road debris.
A very stupid thing do do in my opinion.

i use to with my older mare and 505 now have 506 havent done so as window in it and sees to have better ventilation

Some people simply don't think of the consequences it is as simple as that, they may be doing it with the best will in the world, just a lack of common sense.

I don't have that problem, no front unload, horrid things, why can't people train horses to reverse out politely? I don't even travel with the back doors open, mostly I transport youngsters, often loose. My trailer has roof ventilation and large, screened and barred sliding side windows.

I do wish that the bods that design trailers would actually stand in them and 'test drive' them, then they might get the ventilation, visibility and sheer noisiness sorted. I have never yet been in a trailer that doesn't sound as if it is coming apart at the seams, mine included, although I ripped the partition out and that made a difference, it astounds me that horses have the honesty to ever set foot in them at all!

I have seen it done too. Stupid. Best way to give your horse damaged eyes. PLUS - it dramatically increases the fuel consumption of the towing vehicle.

I never do it
Can you imagine being on a quiet country lane when you meet a big wagon and horsey has his head poking out, what if its out far enough to make contact with the wagon...

no, never! you'd have to have zero common sense.
there's a girl near me who does it all the time though and her horse rests his head on the top of the front ramp and sticks his head out of the "window".... stupid girl.

I see more trailers travelling with this open than shut. Very foolish and I wouldn't. I don't because I have a box not a trailer.

A friend of mine once forgot to close it and as soon as she closed the rear ramp, her horse tried to get out through the front window. He reared up in the trailer and got his front legs stuck over the breast bar. He looked comical just suspended there like that but it was dead scary. We just couldn't think of a way of getting him off it because lifting it would have been impossible. Thankfully he sorted himself out!
She was so embarrassed though because we were at a local show and there were loads of people there to witness it :D
