Are there any cheapish trailers out there that can easily carry a 17.2hh ID x WB and a 16.2 warmblood?

Agree the big ifor should do you-make sure you have a huge 4x4 for pulling it though so you won't go over the mass authorised weight for the vehicle pulling.

Well we have asked around and it seems a Shogun is the best bet 4x4 wise, the man at the 4x4 garage has 2 17hh horses and said he used to have a Land Rover but it didnt have the power.

Thanks for the tip regarding the trailer, I didnt know Ifor made them that big

Ifor make the 510, the only problem is that the front ramp is on the offside (the road side) - if you are carrying two big horses, the biggest will also be on the roadside which makes the turn on to the front ramp pretty tight for a big horse. This is the thing that put me off them. We are going for another lorry.

A friend has the Ifor 510 and we put 2 x 17.2hh horses in there today and i was pleasantly suprised at the room they had - i did imagine they would be slightly more 'squashed'!

We have a 510 extra (Its just slightly bigger but its oldish) and it is great takes my 17hh and chunky 16.3hh easily. We never use the front ramp apart from to sit on at shows. I have always found backing them out far easier and leads to far less problems of getting hips caught etc.

Rice do some very sturdy trailers with extra height and width, and the ramp is on the curb side, making unloading easier.

I would be concered about the towing vehicle too. Are your horses TB types or hunter/cob types?

i'd go for the 2.8 long wheel base pajero its the import version of the shojun usually cheaper to buy if you could afford a bit more than i'd get a 3.0 TD Landcrusier, auto's are better than manuals as the gear shifts make for a smoother tow.

Good luck

Thank you, oh yes we definitely want an automatic!

My last horse was a nightmare to load so Im looking forward to being able to go places now!

I had a look on the Ifor site, the 510 looks the best, good value too!

We use to have an Rice Triple. It was designed to carry two horses and a pony (we only ever used it for two horses). It was significant bigger (longer) then the Ifor 510. It was quite heavy though so you needed something decent to pull it with. I would definitely buy one again.

I've got the 'big' rice to carry 2 X 17.2's, as my long and lanky 16.1 was not a graet loader so the extra space helps- in fact i'd go as far as to say he actually likes it now and has turned into a very good loader!

The trailer is lovely and light and airy and IMO worth the money. It has loads of things as standard which are extras on the ifor's, and we even got a insurance approved wheel lock with it for free. When we looked at the Ifor's i couldn't beleive that tie rings on the out side were extras! whats that about, doesn't everyone need them?!

We tow it with a hse diesel range rover and have not had any probs.

Hi there
I had the ifor 510 but I seriously dont think that they are big enough!! It is not only the width you must think of but the length aswell and the turning angle you have to get one horse out?? I used to have one for my 16.2 warmblood and we used to always put him in the rhs but i used to tie back the front of the patition to the left so he had space to turn!! I have a swb 2.8 td Pajero (Foreign version of shogun) and it is great for towing, highly recommended. Ifor trailers are great value for money and light to tow, the main thing is to make sure that it will be big enough!

Have a 510 for my 17hh and 16.2 both medium weights and it carrys them easily when pulled by our Mitcubishi L200 animal. Never had a problem with the front ramp as long as used correctly and held back properly when opened. I am not a fan of reversing horses out of ramps, I beleive it is safer to bring them out front first!

I've got a 510 for my 16.3 carthorse! Luckily he has to travel on the left anyway so no problem getting him out of the right side front ramp. Don't know where you are, but it is seriously worth shopping around for the cheapest price. I've had mine about 2 1/2 years, and mostly they were over £4k new, but the Devizes (Wiltshire) Trailer Centre sold me one for £3,500.

I've had a Rice Beaufort Double and an Ifor 510 and love the 510, found the Rice was still to low for my 17.2hh (also took a 7' rug) whereas she was very happy in the 510 and I never had an y problems unloading her although I agree the design of the Rice with the ramp on the left was far better!

Ifor Williams 510, Bateson Deauville, Wessex Olympian etc, Rice, Richardson. All of these do trailers that will carry 2 big horses. To tow such weight you will need a big 4x4. Yopus may find that a Pajero will be cheaper to buy than the Shogun.

Definitely worth asking dealers what their best price is. I got my Ifor for £500 below the list price & it was only £200 more than 3yo trailers I was looking at.

Hopefully I will be looking for one soon too. My boy isnt as big as yours, 16.1 ish but my HB505 wasnt big enough so it had to go. Im not having another Ifor, they are great but I dont like the ali floor or should I say my horse doesnt. Rice have more room at the front in front of the breast bar to manoevure but the newer ones are expensive. I fancy a large Richardson, love the Bateson but need double back top doors. Was told to avoid Wessex although they look great and quite liked the look of the larger Cheval Liberte I think its a 2003XL model.

Ifor dealers seem to be set quite high sales targets so will often be generous with discount on a new one as opposed to secondhand, S-H 510s are like rocking horse poo anyway!
We had a 505 and with an american quarter horse which had big shoulders and tummy it was easier to back her out than get her round the corner to the front ramp. she got so good at it she would load and unload herself on command!

Wessex Pegasus Equestrian. Huge, lightweight, inviting, ramp on n/s, pulled with Four Track. Regularly took 2 monsters before I bought a lorry.
