Am currently doing a course about training classes with the aim of maybe running some when i finish. As well as the study, I am also helping out at a local puppy training class for practical experience.
Im just wondering what training classes everyone has available in their area? Obviously there will be the usual ones such as puppy classes and then beginner through to advanced, agility etc but are there any more unusual classes on offer? Something like heelwork to music etc? (this may be common, but where I live it isnt!)
Are there any things you would like to see in a class that arent?
I have a few idea for possible classes when I eventually start them up- such as specialised classes for rescue dogs, heelwork to music (just fun, not too serious), fun agility and possibly even something along the lines of dog training for children specifically (i know there will be about a million health and safety concerns here, but its just a thought)
So basically am after your thoughts on what classes are available in your area, what ones you would like to see and whether or not you would attend a more unsual class

Ours is a breed specific club.

We do obedience, agility and protection work (although I appreciate 9/10 people won't want to do this and my dogs do not show much aptitude for it) as well as ringcraft and there is a specific focus on dog-aggressive animals and those who are not properly focused on their owners and may chase bikes, cars etc.

Heelwork to music and rescue classes are good ideas.
I really think it is important to focus on good lead manners and tackling aggression towards other dogs/fixation on moving objects is very important, I couldn't have got on top of my boy without the help of our club trainers (and a few folks on here

Lots of people are going for big, working-drive dogs and don't know how to cope when they start to show fear/aggression/dominance so that could be a route to go down.

ETA after reading MM's post - we also have WT elements including some of the agility equipment and scentwork/tracking.

We are pretty well served with training classes locally. From puppy classes through the KC Good Citizen awards, heelwork to music etc up to competitive agility. I think training classe specifically for children would be a good idea, but as you say suspect the H & S thing would be a nightmare.
The only thing lacking in the immediate area is a good WT training class, but that is pretty specialist, and I think people are prepared to travel out of their area for that anyway.
Good luck anyway, hope others can give you some suggestions.

That was a much more consice version of what I meant!

And thanks for the last suggestion CALA, I have lost all feeling in my arm so a class for 'numb owners' would do the trick

Regards dog training for kids- i have a vision in my head of an 8 year old turning up with a huge German Shepherd or similar......
would just be nice to offer children (older ones maybe) the chance to come along and learn how to properly handle their dogs etc.
its something to think about I suppose.

In fairness, I think I was about five or six...

We have two eight year olds at our club with young GSD bitches. One is accompanied by her dad, the other with her great aunt, but it is great to get them involved.

LOL I'm sure you didn't....

I used to get involved with training Barney, he was a BIG lab and I was only about 10

But in my imagination the small child would be getting towed behind an out of control dog!!

What we do at our club is have the child with a main lead and the adult has a back-up lead in case the dog decides to tank off, one stands on either side of the dog, child on the right side of the dog, adult on the left so they can step in if need be, prevents any unauthorised towing and forces the dog into correct heelwork

In fairness Barney was quite good at training classes (other than that special, special time he pulled the trainer over and dragged him along the ground) - he saved his really special behaviour for out and about!

There's a wealth of training classes here. Besides agility etc. our local centre offers:

Tricks
Flying Disc (an actual dog sport)
Flyball
Specific obedience classes i.e. obedience for adult dogs, catering specifically to rescues etc.
Canine Good Citizen Test
