My collie type 2 yrs old was always friendly people and dogs. Recently she’s been meeting new dogs nose to nose in a stance with hackles up. I pull her away and scold. If she’s off lead I can call her away. Dogs she already knows are fine and most new ones, it’s just occasional. How would you deal with this please, I’ve had her a year, rescued.

I would avoid on lead greetings altogether.

I would focus more on training her to have a neutral response. Focusing on you and ignoring others.

I would only allow her to 'socialise' with a select few who she is already comfortable with.

It is often counter productive to allow dogs to greet too many other dogs.

Thank you for the replies. So I keep a closer eye out when she’s on lead and stay away from other dogs. Off lead, again close watch, recall before she gets close to the other dog then praise for the recall. Sounds ok in theory, wish me luck!

You don’t have to “stay away” from other dogs, just train her to be more focused on you than them. Use treats or her fave toy or whatever and massive praise for ignoring them basically. No more scolding or she’ll associate other dogs with stress and then you’ll have a dog aggressive situation of your own making.

Thank you. That makes sense. We tried it this morning and did see improvement but can’t be sure as it’s only occasionally she does it. Thank you.
