Hello,

Could anyone offer advice please? I am looking for transport for my 17hh Cob x and 15hh Appaloosa.

I have seen one trailer that will carry two 17hh horses however I would prefer a lorry. If I was to find and buy a trailer suitable I assume the trailer would need a service and insurance as well as the insurance and tax on the 4X4 (this would not be my main car - just kept for towing) therefore would it be cheaper to run/maintain a lorry? I understand the initial layout may be more for a lorry.

I feel a lorry may be easier to drive (young lady driver) please correct me if you think otherwise.

If I was to buy a lorry I assume I would not be LEGAL to carry both my horses together in a 3.5t lorry, is this correct?

Also I read 7.5t lorries registered BEFORE April 2007 DO NOT require plating, is this correct?

Could anyone tell me how much it costs to run their lorry..

Insurance?
Tax?
Service?
MOT?
Plating? (if required)

Sorry for the silly question, just begining to look into buying my first transport.

Any advice welcomed please.

Thank you

no all 7.5 ton lorrys need plateing its another name for the MOT about £100 plus any work needed, tax on 7.5 is 165 per year i would budget for about 500 per year for plate and basic service
no 3.5 ton will carry two big horses.. pay load is about 1200 kg max so you need to deduct you, passingers and tack/feed plus horses which would total about 1500 kg ..
car insurance should cover a trailer for road risks when hooked up you may want insurance to cover against theft etc you will need a test for 7.5 ton or a trailer if you passed your car test after 1997... hope that helps

Thank you for your reply, I only REALLY need to transport the 15hh for lessons and comps. If I am to get transport it would be nice to be able to travel both my horses for pleasure rides and maybe holidays.

I will work out the costs of each option, if it is alot cheaper to use a 4x4 and trailer I feel I have no option.

I would need lessons with a trailer before buying as I feel I may need to learn how to reverse with a trailer. Yes I would need to take a test too.

Thank you for your advice
