Hi,

I am currently weighing up the options, and trying to decide which to go for.
I have a 15.2hh cob and I drive a Landrover Freelander.

Either I take my towing test and buy a lightweight trailer.
* does anyone know how much it costs to insure a trailer per year?

Or I change my car for a smaller more economical one and get a 3.5tonne lorry which I can drive on my normal license, but obviously the lorry will be fairly costly as they hold their price so well.

Or I do my HGV and get a larger lorry which would be cheaper to buy, but I would imagine more expensive to run!

What do you guys think please? What would you do??

Thanks!

im in the same predicament ! im 20 so not sure if they would even let me be insured with either but personally yes it would be easier to have a horsebox but to buy a trailer would be much cheaper i have seen on these forums some horse insurance companies you can have a trailer as a add on for like £90 :S not sure though hope this helps slightly haha

How about this for B licence towing...

4X4 NISSAN XTRAIL
Kerb = 1470
GVW = 2000
Towing = 2000

With one of these single horse trailers - they may be others..
BATESON LIGHT HORSE TRAILER downplated by manufacturer (easy - just a phone call - usually free) to 1450 leaving a load of 775 kgs

CHEVAL LIGHT HORSE TRAILER already plated at 1400 leaving a load of 745 kgs

IFOR LIGHT HORSE TRAILER downplated by manufacturer (easy - just a phone call - usually free) to 1450 leaving a load of 680 kgs

with all of these make sure you get any trailer you buy checked against The Equipment Register -all new Ifors and lots of other trailers get registered and if stolen this may flag up when you check the ID number on the trailer.

Also get the floor checked out - non metal floors for any water ingress or bowing, and metal floors for any rust/rivet failures etc.

I'm also in this predicament. I'm 21 and only have a B licence atm. I only drive a little 106 so obviously I would have to change my car if I was to go down the trailer route. I like the ideas I'd a 3.5 tonne but hey are so expensive and I'm not sure I would really use it enough
