I really need to think seriously about transport for my neds, with particular attention to cost! Currently we use my dad's X-trail to pull our pony trailer, with my 15hh (and growing) horse, although we will be taking my sisters pony too when she gets one (14.2hh ish). We have to rely on my parents to get to shows, and as the horses are not their interest, and my little brother has to come too and hates it, it's a bit of a battle to get anywhere! There is nobody else at our yard or nearby so we can't get lifts

Firstly, to pull 2 horses, we'd need a rather heavy car, approx how heavy? And what is this weight?? if trailer is ~900kg and each horse ~500kg (from other post) then it's got to be at least 2000kg! Am I right?

Secondly, ideally I could take the horses, saving the hassle of getting the rest of the family on board. Dad hates towing! But I'm only 21 (had licence 4 years) so I can't pull the trailer without doing a test, and can't drive any sort of lorry either? Heard you have to be 23 to drive even the little 3.5ton ones?

So, what's the best thing to do? Buy a monster car (possibly bigger trailer as my ever growing horse fills the pony one on his own) and bite the bullet and do my trailer test (dear god!) Wait until I can drive a little lorry? I'm so confused!!

(was irritated last night that a woman wanted to borrow my pony sized trailer on a show day, suggesting I hack the 2 hours to the show, to transport her HW 16.3hh horse! In a car that is no way legal to pull a trailer!!)

Help!

Ok, I'm 21, so have had to get a 3.5ton as by the time you have paid to do trailer license, it is cheaper than starting from scratch with car and trailer. However, If you have towing vehicle and trailer already, I would take your trailer test tbh!

You can drive a 3.5ton straight after passing your test, there is nothing in the law that says you cant. The only age restriction is on insurance, but at 21 you shouldnt have a prob....

Thanks for your replies! My dad has a towing vehicle, but to be honest it seems to be struggling with Flash alone now he's grown, let alone another 14.2hh! My dad won't let me near his car to drive it, let alone pull a box haha! We have a pony trailer, but with Flash's growth he touches the front and back, and fills the thing alone, so possibly a little 3.5ton thing and a sensible run around for work might be more sensible than having a big monster of a 4x4 for everyday use! hmm I shall discuss with parents!
