Both my daughters like to compete (showing locally) and due to various factors we have a few ponies and sometimes we would like to take 3 but at present we tow an IW 505, so limited to two. Has anyone got any thoughts on 3 horse trailers or is a lorry the only way round this?

Unless your ponies are tiddlers then you would struggle to get a truck that could safely pull the three horse ifor and the ponies. I think a lorry would be the only way for this - if you go and buy one then make sure it has the payload you need, a scary number have shockingly low payloads and wouldn't be able to carry the weight of the horses or ponies that the lorry has stalls to take! Alternatively, perhaps if you know someone going to the same show, they could take one of yours if they have the space?

maybe you could rent a lorry? i know people who have 2 trailers to take the whole familys horses to fun rides etc

Our ponies are all under 13 hh. We live quite rurally and as far as I know there is no lorry hire service available-pity. Most lorries only seem to carry three people which is tricky if the whole family want to come! Some people I know put their smallest one in the space at the front of their trailer in front of the breast bars but i will never be tempted to do that!

Rice used to do a trailer that was designed for 2 horses and 1 pony that was legally towed by a big 4x4 i.e. Discovery, Shogunn etc

Not sure if they are still around.

Ifor Williams do some multiple trailers, HB510XL and HB610 I imagine you'd need a pretty powerful vehicle to tow them with though?

We have an old three horse trailer that we're currently refurbishing top to toe. It's a solid beast and will weigh a substantial amount when he's finished (he's called Hugh lol), but we've put high rated van tyres on to take the weight, the floor is being replaced with 3/4 hardwood ply and aluminium sheeting, and we tow with a Discovery, which has the highest car towing weight at 3.5 tonnes.

We had a lorry. 7.5 tonne, but only had a payload of 1.8 tonne, so by the time one had added up people, fuel, tack, hay, general gear, it didn't leave a lot over for ponies :(

yes that should work with a 7 seat discovery, shogun or landcruiser ....simples :D or there are plenty of 7.5 ton lorrys that will carry 3 and have a cut thru so room for passingers in the living.....

We have a HB510XL. We have used it for 1 x chunky 15.1hh and a 14.3h finer horse.

with plent of room for hay/tack and anything else.

Sadly we have stopped showin so am now selling....

I've seen a converted standard I.w. 505 that's been converted to take 3 ponies. Think they were 11-12.2hh two went in towards the front the breast bar was pulled further forward, then one pony went behind lengthways.

It worked fine for them.

depends on what you want really and your budget. Also the towing capacity of your car, if incapable of towing a 3 pony trailer the cost of exchanging it and then fuelling a bigger/more powerful car every day, rather than fuelling a lorry just for competitions, can be inhibitive. If you can pick up a safe lorry in budget with a big enough payload then I would go for that seeing as it sounds like you are out and about a fair bit so the engine wouldnt quibble :). Lorries in general provide a better quality of ride for the beasties on board, and you would hopefully have room to pop all tack and horse junk in it so no mess in the car :). Lorries also make it easier to stay dry! you would definetely be able to tack 2 (sane!) ponies up inside if its wet and possibly 3 depending on dimensions and layout. If you can get one with a living of some sort it makes life (particularly yours! :p) even more pleasant :D.
