I read a really good post on whether to buy 4x4 & trailer or lorry ( but had a caravan requirement too!)
I am looking to either buy a 4x4 with trailer or lorry ( any under 7.5t - I'm an older driver!) my two issues are that I will only be using trailer about once a week (tops!) so the 4x4 is an expensive car for daily commutes! If I buy lorry then I have to buy a car too.
Bar costs it's the safety of towing a trailer that worries me, I've always had little lorries, nothing plush but greatvfor the horses. I've read a few scary stories about trailers going over and my horse is quite a nervous traveller so I am really worried that could make it even more risky.

In terms of 4x4 ended up thinking shogun was most economical - I liked the Nissan x trail but was worried about towing a large trailer ( horse is 16.3) plus worried it would not be as sturdy as the shogun!

Please - any advice would be very much appreciated!

The Nissan Teranno is better than the X trail . although older there is nothing it cannot do. The x trail is more of a urban 4 x 4, I do not tow a trailer( horse one) only box trailers, I brought a horsebox too. I do not find the teranno particularly heavy on juice.

Try the Honest John website http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/
scroll down click on the make on the left and compare the good and bad points.

I will not tow a horse trailer again, due to accident that happened.

Hi , last year I went from 4x4 + trailer to 7-5ton lorry purely for running costs ,I now drive a little punto for my every day work and school run stuff and it has saved me ££££ and another upside is when at shows we have living hide in when its p-ing down .

I agree on the first point. The Terrano is awesome. I have to disagree on the latter. It is beyond thirsty!

We have the Terrano for towing, and a £500 KA as a run around (Dad works from home, so only goes to the village/town) and I drive a Focus day to day. Cheaper than running the Terrano!

The key is how much mileage you do weekly!! tiny and the 25/30 ish mpg and the servicing costs of a 4x4 isnt too bad, then do you need or want living because you show and need to change shelter between clases or take family/friends( lorry) or just need move the horse about (
trailer) then you have depriciation which can be a huge cost!! new or used trailer low , new 4x4 very high, used 4x4 medium, lorry can be low .. safety is an issue big trailer small 4x4 not great even if legal ........

What do you want advice on? What car or whether your trailer is going to over turn?

My car is ace and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it but if you are going to be a nervous wreck towing then I think you should get a lorry. The last thing you need to be whilst towing is panicking!

Must be your journeys etc,the qmound or if you pull a horse etc

I do not find its that bad I use mine daily for feed collections, driving 2 hrs to mums etc. I do not tow a horse trailer and I only fill up once a month

the X trail is ok but when you stick both in a muddy field with a horse trailer on the back The Terrano would never let you down, I see many x trailers stuck when i go on sponsored rides, in fact one day a lady drove her trailer out onto the the road, then went back to an x trail lady hitched up and got her trailer too was quite funny

I drive an X-Trail and tow a 16.3 ISH in a single horse trailer and it is fine. I bought the X-Trail for work and when it was less battered managed 40-44mpg in the wilds of Devon but its now closer to 38-40mpg. This is not towing mpg though! Servicing costs etc are comparable. I would happily buy another X-Trail when mine dies :-)
