What licence /insurance do i need so VOSA dont kick my butt?

for hire and reward - not private! as a business

no lectures about how little money i will make etc its not something im going into blind!

thanks :D

You need "hire/reward" insurance, I looked into it with my 3.5t but in the end decided it wasn't worth it for the hassle. Dont know about license issues but if you're doing it with a hgv you need to make sure you're up to speed on the eu tacho regs - maybe worth pm'ing ROG : good luck with the venture :D

If its with a 3.5 ton just hire and reward insurance , and the DEFRA livestock regs , a 4x4 and trailer you should be get away with a tachograph( drivers hours) and the above !
over 3.5 ton a Hgv opperators licence, for which you need accounts showing finacial standing, needs to show quite a large sum in hand!! and planning permision for parking , transport manager and 6 weekly safety checks/ services, plus the above tacho defra regs.. hope that helps good luck ..

thanks guys - will DEFO be a 3.5 ton!

ive been naughty and discovered i can get a graduate loan and it will cost a lot less than a normal loan to buy a box (for me......) so if i can do that and put it to business use too......... (legally though!!!) i dont want any law cases against me!!!

3.5 conversion, new type?

:)

Be very careful about what 3.5 ton box you buy because many of the conversions have very little payload & you will find you'll be over weight as soon as you put a horse in it. Even the conversions that have been correctly built. although having two stalls will not have the payload to carry 2 horses.

Using a 3.5 box!

I am doing research but not really sure where to begin!!

For someone with a business degree I fail lol :)
You would be best with a simple coach built type new or a used one thats old enough to fit your budget , I guess it will need to be out most days and doing a few miles so you want a tidy well serviced lorry to start with, and dont skimp on servicing if you arnt mecanicaly inclined find someone who will check it for before you buy and then check weekly and service as required ,... the type of lorry racing yards use are good, look at the alloy sided ones with a good internal hight and as op said check the payload !!1200kg is a good rateing and will allow you to carry two ponys or one horse.. you will get into trouble and invalidate your insurance if you run overloaded so be aware of what you carry..

brillthanks guys :)

if it dosent work i still want a box for me but im going to do my research properly and then go for it :)

as i already pay £100 a month when i want to hire a box (dosent include fuel) mine would be £100 a month repayment on a loan anyhow... so in that respect only its worth it...

+ travelling there and back to pick it up - would be lovely to just throw the pony in and go a show whenever i want! :)
