Hi, can anyone clear this up for me? I need to transport two ponies from Newhaven to Dieppe. A return ferry crossing for lorry and driver has already been provided at no cost to the driver/transporter. I've been trying to get transport donated as it is for charity, but to no avail. So I am now looking in to self drive hire, and wondered if you can let me know what licences are required to transport horses - of course this is counted as international, so more confusion! Also, what insurance will be needed and can I only approach self drive companies who hire out for international transport (rare!) or would I be able to get insurance for that day to cover it? Finally, if anyone is feeling nice and would like to help out, please pm me...getting desperate!!! Thanks!

The only bit I know is that a Defra licence is needed (only) if you are driving them in the course of a business. Instinct would say you are not if it is a one off charitable run, but it might be worth checking.

The hire co would def have to be aware that you were taking it abroad, they should be able to help with who insures what I would think?
