Hi all,

Apologies if this sounds stupid but in 30 years of owning horses, I have never had to use a transporter so just a few quick questions...
I'm not going to be there when they pick the horse up so do I need to provide them with a head collar/lead rope, hay and travel boots or do they use their equipment or do I need to speak to the owner? Also, I'm assuming they will have to take the passport with them as travelling the horse so I'm assuming they just get it from the owners and will give it to me on arrival? Is there's anything else I need to do/think about? I will check if all documentation/paperwork is up to date etc.

Sorry for being so thick but it's just something I've never had to do!

When I bought my Connie from a private home I organised transport with a reputable chap and he provided a headcollar and lead rope which I gave back to him once the pony arrived. I had bought B’s saddle because it fitted well and I trusted the owners to put it on the horsebox along with his passport which they did. The pony was in Somerset and I am in the Cotswolds and having met them I knew they were honest enough to trust. 3 years on we are still in touch ?

Nothing is a stupid question, just one you haven’t come across before. If your aren’t sure ask the sellers what they are providing and if you want to use your own headcollar, travel boots etc then send them on the outward journey if you can. No reputable transporter will leave without the passport as it is a legal requirement so make sure you tell them to collect it for you.

I've never known a transporter use travel boots. You're usually lucky if they have a tail bandage. Headcollar and lead rope is either provided by the vendor or the transporter.
Depends how long the journey is but not many provide hay. They could run into difficulties with empty nets /difficult travellers and also with dust issues within the lorry.

Ive transported twice (and about to again to move abroad), all times with big firms and non of them have allowed travel boots etc. Headcollars and leadropes supplied by yourself/owner.

Haynets carried by all and could be supplied by the transporter, Parkers are just about to do the three day transport for our 4 to move abroad and they are more than happy to provide soaked hay for the journey and overnight stops.

You need to ask your transporter, some are more accommodating than others.

It is a legal requirement that the seller provides a head collar (I didn’t believe that when I was told, but checked and it is true).
When I used a transporter I gave her a list of things that I had agreed would be sent with the pony. She was excellent and phoned me before she left to say that the seller had forgotten to bring one of the rugs we had agreed on.
