My first time transporting a 6 month old. 4 hour trip. I have taken the middle section out of the trailer and made a deep bed of shavings. I plan to travel the foal loose without a head collar. Would you do the same? Also would you put in a hay net or pop a couple of biscuits on the floor? Thank you.

I take all the partitions out of the lorry and put a straw bed down and travel them loose with a foal slip on. Definitely don’t use a haynet. Close all doors front and back so there is no gap to invite him/her to try to jump out. Remove the breast bar if you haven’t already done so. I find that they travel better than you think they will.

make sure you unload in a secure environment. I drop the ramp either into the school or a field in case they come off a bit quick as I don’t want a crash landing onto tarmac or other hard surface.

I hired someone to move my 6 mo from near Wales to Essex. It was a 3.5 ton box, no partitions. He traveled loose with no head collar and hay on the floor. Apparently he was as good as gold and on one of the breaks he had to be given extra hay. The transporter said he had never seen a little one eat so much! He is still a little greedy guts now! And bless him he just walked off the ramp at the end of the journey.

You need to pad and then tape with duck tape anything that stands proud it your trailer has a low window at the front cover it .
and as said above make sure the jockey door can’t spring open with a blow to the inside .

thank you all, I’ve closed all the windows and doors and jocky door has a bolt on. I’ll pop the hay on the floor and take along a safety head collar for just in case but will travel him without one. ??

loose with hay on the floor.
First baby I bought 100 years ago was herded off a hill a headcollar slapped on after being cornered in a barn. In my ignorance I proceeded to bandage her legs and tie her up in the single trailer. We drove home 3 hours stopping every hour to check on her and offer water and more hay she came off the trailer was lead to a stable I removed her bandages and wormed her before taking her headcollar off. Thinking back it was sheer ignorance and not expecting problems I simply did things with her I had long done with adult horses. She was a wonderful pony probably the ultimate perfect pony in spite of my ministrations learned a lot from her good and bad but just an example of what not to do. Good luck with your baby

We've travelled a lot of weanlings and always loose. If in a trailer, we take breast bar out as well as the partition. Bed down with straw or shavings and hay on the floor. They travel well as they can move around to find the best position for travelling (we watch them on a camera) We prefer to have a headcollar on (in case of a problem) but always make sure there is nothing they can get caught up on. Safe trip!

I've travelled 2 foals (separate occasions) in my 506. I have taken the partition out my trailer. Plus the breast/breech bars so the trailer is empty. Shavings down and travelled the foal loose with all doors shut. I did this as well with my horse up until she was in her 2nd year. Never had any problems.
