Is there a law coming in that will mean we have to take a test to take our own horses to shows that give prize money.
My daughter came home from the coaching devel. roadshow saying she has to take a test to take her horse to an event.I didn't speak to her for long so have no details .It is not our business or anything, does anyone have up to date info?

There were a few articles in H&H last year about this. It is to do with having an operators licence. Basically if you are going to shows as an amateur and not carrying anyone elses horses you shouldn't need an operators licence.

As long as you are not getting any money for transporting the horse then you should be ok, so travelling your own horse is fine, obviously now we have to take passports with us as a matter of the law.

Even if you are a pro then as long as you have no more than 4 horses and have one person per horse you are fine too. Plus it has all been put back until I think April because the government (or someone at least) were not organised enough. There is a good article in the members bit of eventingworldwide on it, and have a look hre for some FAQ:

If anyone is going on the eventing roadshow please check up on this as they were saying something about ,if you are in a class with prize money then you have to have it.I think they have it a bit wrong but I will await your posts

You are talking about the WATO regulations I think. Some of my family have taken theirs today and past.

My understanding is if the prize money is significant then you have to have it. Also you need it if journeys are over 8 Hours.

All the regulations are on the DEFRA web site.

I think you mean the new DEFRA transport of animals. Basically anyone who transports for economic activity over 65km (about 40 miles) must take a handler or handler/driver test.

Economic activity means anyone who transports as part of a business or commercial activity, which aims at achieving financial gain.

My YO had to take it as she takes her horses to shows, which increases their value which means she can sell them for more or something stupid like that! I thought you also needed it if journeys were more than 50miles or so.

two issues
a compitence test for transporting livestock
and
VOSA (?) requirements for using a goods vehicle for reward

Winning a class on the horse does not mean that you transport it for reward
Getting diesel money off someone is a grey area
Taking a fee for moving a horse DOES require additional licencing
BEF are up to speed on this if you want advice
