Mac spends all day in the field, and only comes in overnight. I turn him out just after 7 in the morning, and he comes in any time between 5 and 7 in the evening.

Considering the length of time he is in, his beds are a real mess in the mornings. This morning it looks as though he has had half a dozen mates round.

Anyway, have been thinking about the state of his beds, and it has occured to me, that maybe, when he lays down, he is struggling a bit to get back up, hence the mess? He was diagnosed last year with arthritis is both hocks, and he has arthtritis and ringbone in one front leg. He seems fine in himself, not got any knocks or scratches that I can see. Is there any way to know, as I rarely see him getting up, as he hears the car in the morning so is up when get round to him.

He lived out 24/7 in the summer and I quite often saw him rolling in the field. He seemed to get up ok then, but obviously, if he is down for any length of time sleeping, he could stiffen up.

How big is his stable?? My mare used to be in a 10' X 12' stable at it was always a pit, because she used to lie and walk through her poo. She is now in a 12' X 12' one and is much better. I also have her on Bedmax now as opposed to shavings as they give a firmer bed, that doesn't shift as she gets up (she is a 15.3hh MW Cob).

There may lie your problem. I know my mare didn't struggle to get up and has never been cast (touches wood!!!), but in the smaller box she was flithy., poos all squashed and walk in. 2ft does sound a lot, but it can mean the difference between poo being squashed and walk on to it being left in a neat row at the back!!!
