My 7yr old was shod for the first time in March. After eventing over the summer i had the shoes taken off on saturday. He is now lame (not just footy) on his front right :( even in hoof boots. Is this likely to be an abcess and is that common straight after taking shoes off?

His diet and routine stayed the same as from before he was shod, being shod and now barefoot again.

Should just also add, i use sole cleanse weekly to keep thrush away, the frogs & soles weren't touched/trimmed, he is heel first landing and his soles look & feel like rock...

Have just taken my new horse barefoot he is an x racer with navicular symptoms through and through he also has a boxy foot and flat foot. He has been barefoot for 5 weeks now at the beg was very very sore stood like a lami pony would so he was booted in front most of the day! I have given him a low sugar startch feed and minerals since he has been with me too. He was lame on the flat foot since the shoes have came off and the more the time goes on the better he is getting still slightly lame but was in all 3 gaits at the beg now you can't see it in walk without boots on grass you can and canter but with boots and pads he is sound! Hope that helps it just takes time.

My TB abcessed when I took his shoes off. He was already on a decent diet and had very little grass, so I think it was just because of structural weaknesses caused by shoeing. The abcess resolved after poulticing, and I haven't had one since (that was a year ago).
