Looking for what other people have done about hols with hounds. I have taken the dog camping with us to France before but this summer we're going walking in the alps ( without dog ) but if we go back would love to take him but can't fly with him and don't want to drive so far so any ideas of how to get there with mut?

We have taken our Collies to France for the past few years with no problems at all .The French are dog friendly and if the journey is long you can book into a hotel as they are happy to take dogs. This will break up a long journey for you all. There are some cheap hotel groups, but can't think of the names to hand.Getting a passport is much easier as DEFRA have lifted some of the conditions. You can get the rabies jab and travel within three months and no need for blood tests to check for antibodies. Also no need for tic treatment on return and a wider gap between the worming and return to the UK.

Etap or Formule1 ?

I usually ferry or tunnel and then drive don't go anywhere without the dogs. You can use the normal train once your there last time I went minus dogs there was a rabbit and a couple of dogs all running about the train (different carriages) they are very pet friendly in france.

Just remember to check your chip (if you have your own reader take it with you) make a note of where it is if its moved as they do migrate. I have a friend whose chip stopped working and her dog had to stay in quarantine as if it didn't have a passport. Make sure you have all your paperwork and have done your flea and tick and arranged for the return journey treatments.

If you do go by ferry and drive I'd opt for the dog in the car and ask to go and let out to the loo the kennels they have are ok but if you have a big dog they are far too small and although they will arrange for a larger kennel to be in the loading bays there is no lock and no one to keep an eye on them or other people who fancy saying hello...

One of the pups from Evie's litter went to Spain. Her owners didn't want to do too much road travel with her so they did the majority of the journey by ferry. I'm not sure which ferry company it was but the pup was allowed to sleep in the cabin with them, and there was a big exercise area on deck for all the dogs. Might be worth seeing if there are similar ferries which would help you plan your holidays m'n'm.

Yes, we have taken him to France before in the car but this time we're headed for Austrian Italian border and didn't want to drive so far so have been looking in to going on the train but the Eurostar and most ferries don't let dogs on if not in a vehicle
