Hi - I'm new to the doggy section of this forum. I got a lovely rescue dog two weeks ago, she was a stray, thought to have been left behind by travellers after the last local horse fair. She is possibly a border terrier x staffy, approx 2 years old. We are hoping that eventualy my OH will be able to take her to work during the day time so she is not on her own all day - at the moment she is fine as my daughter is at home until college starts in Sept. Problem is she has been sick both times OH has taken her out in his van. Any advice on preventing travel sicknnes greatly appreciated.

Hi............as I am off to work I have little time to post.....there is a post already on here re-travel sickness that may help u its on PAGE 7......posted by BARKINGHORSE under travel sickness.

Keep her in the same place in the car....i.e theboot behind a guard or in a cage.

Always have her travel on an empty stomach and I think I have mentioned in the previous post Ginger and Pepermint are good natural anti sickness remedies....so look into that.

Make the journey as stress free as poss start off little and often.....going to really exciting places i.e the park for some play time.
She has probabley never been in the car and is a little nervy/anxious at the moment.

Hope the post on page 7 helps u a little.

i agree with cala - take her in the car on an empty stomach (at least an hour post feeding to be on the safe side!) and just very short journeys at first (round the block). Keep the window open but dont fuss over her otherwise she will think there is something to worry about. Just pop her in a cage/boot with gaurd/car harness and take her little and often, building up the time. She will slowly get used to it and the sickness should stop. Drive carefully so she isnt flying around as you go round corners.

When Keisha was a pup she suffered awful car sickness, at first we thought it was nerves, and travelled her in the boot with a sweat shirt on to stop her coat getting covered in goo... she was in show coat then. We then experimented with an empty stomach and then feeding a ginger snap biscuit just as we were leaving as ginger helps with car sickness.

But the one thing that cured her was letting her sit in the car lots of times while I was just out cleaning it, listening to the radio or packing it, but not travelling. Then for a week I drove her down to the local chippie, bought her a sausage and feed it to her in the car then drove home... So a combination of making the car a nice place to be in, ginger and sausages did it for us!! Really I think she just lost the worry she had about the car, for her it was a sort of nervousness..

one of mine, Tiggs gets travel sickness, we give him travel sickness tablets that we get from pets at home 2-4 hours before travelling and he's been fine since! hope it helps! xx
