Hi,

Looking at taking a team of horses to compete in France at a show in July, no idea where to start on finding out travel, how much it will cost, if it is feasible etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations.

Thank you!:)

Whereabouts approx will you be heading to?
In the first instance , could you contact the Federation you will be competing under, for advice?

Fontainebleau. It is a side saddle event so have sent them a message but not really organised as some other federations would be so was just wondering if there is anyone on here who has taken horses over to France who could advise.

Thank you!

Try putting this in comp riders, several will have travelled overseas to compete and there are some that are based in Europe that may be able to give advice.

Are you looking at having a transporter to take the horses there and back or do you want to use the lorries you have and self drive it? It would be a big advantage to take your own lorries as you would be able to have all the equipment stored in them and for sidesaddle you would normally need more space than a normal show. If its just paperwork that needs handling then Pedens are very good for actual transport I would use Parkers as they do a lot of shows.

Thank you, would prefer to take our own as we'd camp on site with the horses so would make it alot easier to be able to shove all our own gear in! The only thing I've managed to find so far is that we can go from Dover to Calais that the paperwork is easy and the lorry is charged on length but can't seem to find any prices for that. Any more advice anyone can send over would be much appreciated!

Pop the details in HERE and it will give you a freight price :)

Its also worth asking whoever you get the paperd done through as they will sometimes be able to get a better deal as they may get discounts.

Do you know any dressage riders? There are quite a few competing in France right now. If you know someone, friend of a friend sort of thing, I am sure that a phone call or two and they will give you advice.

Sounds a great trip, try a search on here as I thought someone recently was travelling over with their own horses.
Too far away for me to suggest much, but all the best and hope all goes well.

I used transporters for mine so not sure of the finer details, but I have heard of people who did it themselves with no problems.

Get in touch with some of the major transporters most of them offer stabling on route. Even if you think you will not need it, it's good to have some contacts just in case of emergency. You also want the option of stabling either side of the chanel because if the weather is unsettled horses are not accepted on the ferry. Another thing to consider is breakdown cover - again a worst case scenario but best to have some insurance in place!

The paperwork is very simple, there should be some info somewhere on the DEFRA website.
