Afternoon all,

I currently travel hoss happily in an Ifor 505 on the right. However, I'd like to travel him cross tied with a double width breast bar as I would rather tack up/faff around on the trailer. Obviously there is no room to do this with the partition.
Please can I have your experiences of switching from a happy traveller with partition, to being cross tied. Im aware a lot of horses travel better like this, but im a bit worried he'll end up rolling around in the back
Did you ned take well to the change?

My mare can only travel with full width of trailer. Much easier to balence as can move and spread legs more

Much better. I didn't cross tie, but just tied the horse to the RH ring, as normal, then they stood diagonally.
You do need one for the rear as well, trailer ramps are not made for horse sitting on!

Thanks guys, its nice to get confirmation you're not doing something stupid at times, even when you know you're not :D

I often travel my large horses without a partition and they are much better. I also never cross tie and they do naturally stand diagonally and it gives them much more room.

Exactly the same for me with my old Dales pony- tied to the right and he stood diagonally. He went from refusing to load and stamping about, to happily loading and travelling for hours with no problems.

Thanks all.
Stupid question (which I’m sure I can work out from just looking st the trailer- but I’m not at the yard)
Can I just buy two breast bars ? Assuming the back is the same as the front ??

I do not bother with a bar at the back but I guess you could - the Ifor single bar is adjustable in length. I am sure your Ifor agent will advise you but surely if it fits across the front of the trailer the back of the trailer is much the same width?

For safety purposes, you should have one at the back as well. You just buy two full width breast bars. I just bought mine from Ifor Williams and they sent them to me.

I think you need both as it affects the stability of the trailer.
I love having mine full width. To load I use a long lunge line and then wrap it wound the front bar in order to keep the pony there while I make my way round to put the breech bar in place.
I do a bit of carriage driving and found that I can fit the carriage in the trailer when it is full width and I can take the pony - but sadly not both!

You do need both front and rear bars. Firstly, to help maintain the structural integrity of the trailer in case of a prang, and secondly, because as previously mentioned up thread, the rear ramp clips are not designed to withstand the whole weight of a horse leaning back on its arse.

I have never bothered either - don't have a bar just a nylon strap.
