Travelling a Shetland pony in an Ifor 505

Tomorrow i am going to pick up a 10.2hh pony in our Ifor trailer. I am concerned about hows best to travel him safely bearing in mind the breaching bars are probably high enough for him to go under even on the lowest position.
Its been recommended to remove the partition and travel him loose?

Advise please!
 
I picked up my friend's Shetland when she bought her. The old owner advised us to put bale of shavings at front and then tie her normally. However when we got back, Bonnie had turned herself round and was sitting on the bale of shavings! She did look so cute! Definitely cross tie the pony!
 
Well, this is what I did with our 10.2hh;
(We have a single trailer, but I think this can be done with a double too)
Remove breast bar, and cross tie him using 2 bits of string to the 'place where breast bar gets slotted into', and partition. String should be about his shoulder height? If you were to break hard ish, he can use the X tied ropes to lean on... hope you understand.
On another note, when I was diddy, my mum put a straw bale wedged in at the front, so pony used that if needed. Breast bars are pointless when the pony is under 11.2hh imho.
 
I have travelled all of my shetlands - from 37in to full up 42in - in an Ifor 505 and just tied them up normally. I have never had a problem of any of them going under bars - the big ones wouldn't be able to anyway as they wouldn't fit. Maybe mine are just well behaved. I would also never travel anything loose, or without breast bars, it's just too unstable and you have far less control of the trailer if something goes wrong.

Personally I would just bung it in and tie it up.
 
When I travelled my foal for the first time - couldn't remove the breast bar I hung a tarpaulin over the breast bar to prevent foal from going under it. I also had straw on the floor to prevent the tarpauline from flapping.

Suggest that you leave him loose but ensure he can't get under the breast bar by placing a straw bale or shavings bale in the way.

It is not safe to remove the breast bar as in the event of a sudden stop the pony can be propelled through the front window. Friends bull did that - pushed the window right out of the trailer.
 
When we travelled Shetlands in our trailer we removed the partition & breast-bar and let them travel loose. We also put down a nice big straw bed. :)

They normally ended up facing backwards! :rolleyes:
