My dog loves the car, full stop. Trouble is, he loves all the other cars as well, and spends his time barking and jumping around after them. He's secured by a seatbelt harness, but being a rather large and strong collie (who seems to be able to undo the seatbelt clips with his feet), I can't travel in the car with him on my own, I have to have someone holding him on his lead from the front passenger seat.
So, I have decided that I will either buy a cage or he can go in the boot with a grill. I have a Mark II Golf, so a car cage won't fit in the boot. Any recomendations please. He's very strong!!!

Sounds like you definitely need something as it sounds dangerous.
If you really can't get a cage which fits (which I think would be your best option) then do get a really good dog guard which is fixed.
good luck

Ok, I think I've already decided on a cage. Would it be ok to put in on the back seat and secure it with the seatbelts. It would have to be a large cage, and I'm favouring a Vari flight cage at the moment as he won't be able to see the other cars so much , so may calm down a bit. Getting him in will be another matter though!!
Has anyone used this site

We used the ferplast car crates for Alfie when he was younger but tbh they just made him sick! We now have a grill and him in the boot and he is much better and plenty more space

Luckily for me my dogs just stay in the boot when travelling but for the shooting season I bought a bog standard cage (not a particular travelling one) like this http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/pd5_PET-FEED_DOG_CAGES_41853S_CAGE-FOLD-FLAT-L22xW18x20H-S.htm

I bought an enormous one which fits into my estate car with the back seats folded down - but a smaller one for your Golf would be just as good.

If you decide to buy a dog guard - buy one specific for your car. I bought a cheap one from Halfords and it was a complete waste of money - the dogs just nudged it with their nose and the whole thing collapsed!

Am looking at the Saunders dog guards, they are all specific. My only concern is that the spaare tyre for my car is located in a well in the boot, so not sure if the securing legs would sit properly. My sister's car is less of a problem and will be getting a guard asap.

have to say that after my experience with rubbish dog guards I am very wary of them! A dog cage is the way to go in my opinion.

Also, if you were to have an accident (god forbid) at speed and your dog guard wasn't up to scratch, your dog would shoot through like an unseatbelted back seat passenger and, well, I need go no further.

Just go and buy a cage and keep all our minds at rest!

I got one from Halfarods but it wasn't a bog standard one with legs - it attaches to the back headrests. I've found it to work well, fits very firmly. It did cost about £40 though which was a lot more than the bog standard ones I seem to remember! It's a grill rather than horizontal bars.

I have a little boot so didn't want legs as they take up space.

Ok, cage it is, although I'm going to buy a wire one rather than a plastic 'flight' type one as I don't think he'll go in the latter!! I will try covering it too!!
So, who sells the strongest cages please!!
