I have a 16hh mare and she has been fine travelling in a trailer and a wagon when we bought her. She was a calm traveller and one day we swapped her bandages with travel boots but after then she has not been good in a trailer or a wagon uless she is in my friends trailer with her horse, but every other horse she is the same.

Tonight i was goin to a lesson with show jumper Peter Murphy, we travelled literally 5 meters off the car park on to the drive and she threw herself against the partition, the middle of the partition fell out, she had broke the screws attaching the wood to the metal, and she was falling over onto her side. She paniced trying to stand and she was trying to get her balance back.

She didnt fall over but it was only because she was up against the wall that made her stay up rightish. if she was in the middle partition of the wagon she would of been flat on the floor. when she stood up straight she froze on the spot all tense and breathing deeply and heavily. i burst into tears and was frightened for her. I was so scared i thought she was going to seriously hurt herself

Sorry for the essay but i wanted to know if any one has had travelling problems like this or knows anybody that could help me sort it out like a proffesional? thankyou

Hi, have you had your suspension checked along with other bits on your towing vehicle? What about the floor in your trailer. I ask because a friends horse started being awful to load and travel after being so good, and she found out that her suspension was crap and something else was dodgy and this in turn made her trailer seem as if it was wobbly.
She has since had it done, and horse is fine again.
Try her without back boots, she may have preferred bare legs. Have you thought about a mirror? Sorry if I haven`t been much help. Do you give her a haynet?
I know how frustrating it is for you as my mare used to be a nightmare travelling in a lorry. I now have a trailer and she is brilliant. Good luck with this.

We used to have a pony who would load brilliantly then crash and bang and lean on the centre partition. This happened once on the way back from a fun ride and she ended yp on the floor....so scary.
Somebody suggested travelling her backwards which we did and she was much much better.
Did get flagged down by people though all the time to tell me my horse was loose in the trailor!!! Lol
Also would it be worth trying her without the centre partition and double tied.??

After an incident like this, I personally would go right back to basics, feeding her from the trailer etc to regain her confidence, in the mean-time the other folks have given you some good advise and its a case of looking at every aspect.
