Travelling without a passport - who's at fault?

My friend loans a pony which she'd like to me to take to a few shows over the summer. However, we've recently found out that the pony does not have a passport. I'm now worried about who's to blame if we were to be stopped when travelling her (I know it's unlikely but I like to be within the law)

Is it my responsibility as the driver to make sure she has a passport with us? I imagine it is to be honest but just want to check

Thanks in advance :D

You haven't taken her yet..so ensure she gets one. I would thinkyou would both be at fault. AS transporter though legally it may come on to you. Why won't your friend get one?

It's not her pony so she can't conceivably get it a passport (the pony is kept with it's owner and her son just rides her) I know she should have one but the owner is not the sort of person I'd want to get into an argument about it with - all my three have passports and chips and don't travel without them

No passport, no travel pony.... Simple as that. The PP should be with the Pony's keeper, it's not an ownership doc. If your friend isn't concerned enough about you getting prosecuted for transporting without passport to sort it out with the owner then they don't deserve the favour of the pony being taken.

Although you say unlikely to get stopped, most shows ask for them and ive been to local RC shows where inspectors have come round asking for them!

There's a further complication about travelling without a passport, should you break down and need to be recovered, the driver of the vehicle recovering the horse will not do this without the passport being available. A good reason for always having your horse's passport with them at all times!
