sorry im sure there are many posts on this, but more advice would be great please :)
i have a 10 year old mare, although she is very green as only been ridden consistently for 2 years. she has travelled in a trailer as a 5 year old, with previous owner, but then no regular travelling untill the past year with me. when she has been in my friends 3.5 t, forward facing like a trailer....
so last weekend went out in a trailer with a friend, she hasnt been out since october, i was in a separate car and her husband who drove said he could hear lots of thumping around during the 15 minute journey to nearby school. she loaded straight away, perfectly calm, and with another mare who she in turned out with....
arrived at the yard and opened up, she was standing clamly eating hay,,,, but could see blood and a shoe. she had managed to wrip one of her back shoes off (only on for just over a week so not lose!) and scrape a load of flesh off her leg as well. she walked off calmly and had to find a hose.
on the way back she loaded straight away, calm as if nothing had happened, travelled ok and back with no more injuries...
so my question after all that background: how can i help her travel better? i think she just forgets to balence, as when we left i drove behind and she at times she just leans and loses footing. she is obviously out of practise, but was only a short journey and we drove in front on the way so he couldnt drive too fast!
also boots wise- she wont wear those massive chunky travel boots as she doesnt want to walk with them, and when she did once she tried to lie down in a box and was distressed, so she just had brushing and over reach boots. but would bandages offer better protection?

my horse was a terrible traveller when i bought him....(but always loads perfectly)

So.... i put him in the box every few days with a feed to take his mind off it didnt drive anywhere just made it a pleasant experience for him, i always bandage him up with bandages and fibergee and he wears over reach boots aswell, he travels much better on his own without partitions although this isnt always an option for me i often take him on spins on his own to boost his confidence!

Having said this the fibergee often only survives one or two spins in the box on him (its obviously doing its job)

another thing i found helpful is put vaseline on the hip nearest the partition (sounds weird i know) but from the sounds as of it your mare is paddling (leaning on the partition and scrambling with her feet this helps protect there hips my horse cut himself once or twice before i learned to apply the vaseline!

not sure if this has been helpful :o

Not sure its much help but we had a pony who could pull a shoe off when travelling along side another horse in a trailer but last on herringbone in a box he was fine. He didn't like the lack of space, no matter who was with him. Perhaps try another short journey with just her ?
