Travelling

Does anyone travel their horses in a trailer without partitions and if so how do they find it? Does anyone travel horses loose in a trailer ( with breastbars just not tied up )
What are peoples opinions on travelling loose horses and the safety aspects?
If they are tied up which direction do you think horses travel best ie forward, side or rear facing?

I didn't tie Cat up in the lorry, although he was between 2 properly adjusted herringbone partitions, as no matter how I tied him, he always seemed to get untied or tangled up. No mishaps as a result of him not being tied.

Yeh thats like what i mean. Am thinking of adapting my trailer a different way for Inky. He would have a partition where the breastbars would be and one next to the rear ramp ( Ifor 505 ) So the inside would be like a mini stable really. Just worry about tying him up with him being so young and small!!

My last horse travelled horrendous until I took the centre partition out. That was a 505, I used full length breastbars instead. Have you got minatures? Seen an Ifor that had been adapted for Shetlands, all properly done with extra fixings lower so the breastbars could be at the right height. They had put some half way along too, left the centre partition in so you had storage or could even travel 4.

We travel our with no centre partition, tied up & with breast bars. All the horses prefer it to having the centre partition...

My horse falls over in a trailer with a partition (has no sense of balance me thinks!!) So we removed the partition and he now stands on the diagonal..a much happier neddy

I travel mine without a partition as he has always travelled much better. I have to cross tie him though or else he turns around!

I travel mine with no partition and just a full length bar at the front and cross tie him. He then spreads himself across the trailer and travels happily. I do not use a rear bar because there would not be room for him as I have a 505 and he is a well built cob...he would end up squashed and sitting on it!

Be careful about changingn the configuration of the trailer interior too much because it could have a detrimental effect on the way the trailer tows. Yoummay need to speak to the manufacturer for some technical advice.

I used to travel one of mine with no partition as he would fall with one in. I had breast bars and hind bars fitted. I did tie him up, just to the right hand side ring as usual so he could stand diagonally which kept him very happy. I wouldnt have left him untied though as I wouldnt want him trying to turn round or move too much while moving - would be rather uncomfy driving with a ned pounding about in the back!
