I've just been looking at high fibre, low calorie nuts to put in treat balls to keep my two occupied longer when there is no grass. My first question is do people use these in turnout paddocks, and how likely are they to roll them in to adjoining fields (much to the delight of the neighbouring horses!). Luckily they have an empty paddock one side, a path the other side, and a solid hedge the third side - so only one boundary to worry about, and that has a double fence.
My other questions is what to use. I was looking at Dengie Grass Nuts and the description said they were ideal for treat balls. Then a bit further down it says:
"Please soak prior to feeding to reduce the risk of choke – as a pure fibre pellet, at times the Grass Pellets can absorb lots of water and swell."
Seems like a bit of a contradiction to me and now I'm worried about feeding anything in the treat ball that can swell up in their stomachs.
Would love to hear what everyone uses please? So much choice out there!
