my horse has a small cut/scrape on her hock. Its been there a couple of weeks & Iv been riding as normal but its become wet looking and a bit bloody over the last couple of days as she seems to have knocked the scab off. Iv been cold hosing/hibiscrubbing it to keep it clean as my mares legs are very dirty at the moment! I put her on box rest for a couple of days and have been dressing it (and using zinc oxide cream on it) however the dressing wont stay on and its proving a nightmare to heal! do i put her out in the cold/wet conditions and just slap on a barrier cream? or do I keep her in and bandage it? its a pain in the backside!!!!......

Sounds like you have tried to do an amazing job, the weather isn't your friend at the moment. I would have thought a barrier cream would be enough, but then will it ever scab over if its left moist?

I'd just leave her in today and over the rest of the weekend and assess it on monday so she is out of the wet. But if you leave her in don't apply anything that will hamper the scab forming.

Hibiscrub is so good but also so bad, yu have to get the mix just right, i would use saline (salty water wash) tetcin spray and leave open. If forms a scab and moist underneath, keep reming scab, saline and tetcin, no barrier creams

Had a similar experience, wound opened up after about 10 days and got infected. Had 3 penicillin jabs and vet advised honey (just the cheap stuff not medical grade or Manuka as it was'nt deep) on a leg wound + turn out to stop swelling, worked brilliantly
