How do you treat for lice in horses? Is there an equine 'frontline' that you can apply?

Lots of other threads on here about lice.

You need to treat all horses, clean all rugs, grooming kit and stables. My equine vet advised to use Lincoln Louse Powder, the one that says not for use on horses!! Works a treat, and cheap.

This doesnt sound like lice (lumpy/scabby bits) although I may be wrong. The lice infestation generally becomes noticeable firstly on the face and upper neck where they rub the hair out in patches. You will see them rubbing on trees and fence posts. If this is the case, I treat with Frontline (for dogs) twice at two weekly intervals.

Have you seen any lice? They look the same as flakes of dandruff, but they move

How long have you had your mare and how old is she? If she is young, she could possibly be developing Sweet-Itch, or it could be that she is eating something unsavory in the field, a food intollerance ... it could be a number of things. It might be worth getting the vet to have a look and take a skin scraping if you cant get to the bottom of it.

Hope you get it sorted.

I thought about a food intolerence, but I think those lumps are usually just raised hard or squishy lumps which don't itch??????
Just thought lice as googled the symptoms and the picture seemed to fit. I'll have a good look at her today- shes new only been here a week and is rising two.

The best thing we've found for lice (we take on problem & unhandled horses - so get them a lot) is a liquid called Deosec. It's very strong, we buy it from Scats - you have to ask for it tho, it's not available off the shelf, and they'll ask details from you. But it really works.

my horse has lump, scabby bits all over his chest and up his neck - it's common in clipped, rugged horses at this time of year (although he is neither clipped nor rugged and never had it before). i'm going to treat for lice just in case, but i think it's more likely that he has a Staph folliculitis and is going to need antibiotics and washing the area in Hibi/Malaseb. He is amazingly itchy - never seen him so frantic.

I use cattle flystuff too, but it isn't supposed to be for horses!
I have however used it for ten years now and nothing has suffered..
I got desperate last season as they just wouldn't die.. The repeated louse powder treatment wasn't working so I bought some flypor instead. One treatment with that and they disappeared..
I have also been told frontline works well but haven't tried it. (expensive I would think)
You need to search the coat under the forelock and the base of the tail, on the chest etc, if there are lice you will see small stripey bodies creeping about .
Otherwise try a fungal wash instead perhaps?
