Hi all

We have our water supply through huge 1000 gallon water butts. One, the main source, is looking a bit green.

Is this ok for the horses to drink, and also any ideas about what to treat it with that's safe?

Thanks!

mmm, I'd be interested too, as though mine are smaller, they are looking a bit gunky at the moment.

However, fear not, as I understand rain is forecast for tomorrow??

I hope so, I think the heat might be why the water has turned green. I would hate to think the girls can't drink it :-(

I've just got an IBC container (I think that's what you have, 1000 litres) which needs cleaning out. Was planning to put loads of water in and a packet of sterilizing tablets and rinse it clean. Good idea about wrapping it up, shall give that a go. I plan to have mine to collect filtered rain water off the stable roof.

I rinse mine out when the water stops being clear

I'm going to try Barley Straw logs from an aquatic centre, your supposed to put them in garden ponds to keep them clean/ alge free will let you know

Yes 1000 litres, not gallons, that's like a lake!! We collect rain water but don't filter it and it works fine. I have another two that we are just running through before use, so will try the sterilising tablets, thank you!

go to your local aquatic centre and purchase a uv pond filtration system, run the water out of the butt, through it and then back into it... it will kill the green... that is your most effective solution without adding anything to the water, I would not add steri tabs to it, and barley straw does work but nowhere near as well as a uv light and you can purchase them pretty cheaply
