My 2 year old has thrown a splint. I am picking up DMSO and bute from the vets later. Also going to cold hose it. Someone suggested in Breeding about magnetic boots too. Any other helpful ideas or suggestions gratefully received as he has already started his showing career!

I will be watching very closely as my mare has also thrown a splint at 4 coming 5. She isnt lame although it is sore if I really press under it so I would really like to treat it if I can.

Sorry to hear about your boy.

I'm sorry to hear about your lad, Splints are a pain (literally!) My lad threw one last year. He was rising 7. I cold hosed for 20 plus minutes twice a day to reduce the heat and swelling and on the recommendation of a friend I also tried some homeopathic remedies. I also bought bioflow magnetic tendon wraps. My boy was never actually lame although the area was tender to begin with and this gradually went as the splint settled. Tbh nothing I tried reduced the size of the splint, at best I'd like to hope that I managed to get it to settle a bit sooner. There are many possible benefits to the magnetic boots, so I saw them as an investment. My farrier swears by them for after shoeing and they certainly have helped his circulation as his legs did used to fill in the stable over night and this hasn't happened for a while. He's been turned out in brushing boots ever since to hopefully avoid a reoccurence! Good luck, I hope you are successfull in reducing the size!

My friends horse recently got a splint.

She got some stuff called splint ex, and has been applying it to the lump, and within a week you could see a reduction in size. Might be worth a try.

DMSO is the best stuff so you are doing the right things by applying that (don't cover the leg though!) and cold hose for 20 mins twice a day.

Just to clarify, I turn my lad out in brushing boots so that he doesnt' disturb the splint he's already got if he brushes when hooning around. The splint he has is quite large on the inside of his cannon bone and it might get a knock when he's playing. I also think that he knocked himself which caused the splint as a small wound is what first drew my attention to it, but the ground was also very hard at the time so it is just as likely that the ground was the cause. I'm probably being a little over cautious if anything! He wears NEW equine Airflow brushing boots so as not to let his tendons get too hot which prooves my point lol!

If you go onto horsegossip and look in the guest posting area there is a thread on splints which has some quite inventive remedies - some of which appear to be working.

The green jelly failed miserably though:D
