My rottie has got a delicate tummy - fine on a 'sensitive' dog food, but easily upset by 'commercial' dog chews, e.g. Baker's Jumbone.

Are there any better quality chew type treats which are readily available & which wouldn't upset him? He doesn't like any variety of Bonios & the only treats he likes are Markies but not the red ones. I wanted something bigger really, that he could have a gnaw on.

Doesn't like bones as in proper animal bones. I've heard that pigs' ears can upset tums. I know that rawhide chews are bad & he doesn't really like them anyway.

It's a shame because I'd really like to buy him something that he'd be delighted with.

Oh poor lad! My first rottie had a dodgy tum but she was fine with chews and had a pig ear every night which didn't bother her. Have you tried the tripe chewy things. Sorry can't remember the proper name. They are quite long but still don't last long with my lot. Also bulls pizzles may suit him.

not much good at chews...but when my girl was poorly we cut up bread that was going stale and dried it in the oven then fed that as treats.

if chews are no good - what about a kong with food smeared inside it - nice treat and keeps them busy.

I think James Wellbeloved do a range of hypoallergenic treats.

Pizzles, Mattilta, that's a new one on me

JWB do some treats which my be suitable, Oscar do treats which are wheat gluten free, completely gluten free, also vegetarian treats and 'diet' ones!

As you will have found out, the trick is to read the ingredients, if your rottie is sensitive to a particular meat protein (as my lurcher is) avoid anything with contents of 'meat and animal derivatives'. I would try tripe sticks (stink though), although the best natural chew IMO is paddywack, which any good petshop should sell. It is the dried lattisimus dorsi (sp?) from cattle, it's generally pretty tough, and I've never known a dog say no to it. We own a pet shop, and sell loads of it as it's also safe for puppies as only small pieces come off at a time.

Our older dog lurves the pedigree dental chews, he 'asks' for them every single night at 8pm! However, our other dog (although v v greedy and seemingly having no problem with human food) cannot eat the chews - she lurves them but they come straight back up. We have tried various different things with her but anything sort of chewy seems to be thrown up about 2 mins later (then re-eaten of course!).

The only things she seems to keepdown are the markies (or supermarket own brand ones). My mum had previously rung pedigree about the chews and they suggested cutting into smaller pieces and giving her them that way which did seem to work but not ideal if you want to leave them with something to keep them busy.

What about those filled bones you can get from feed shops? I know many don't agree with feeding them but they keep ours busy for ages and they've not had any problems over the years with them.

Antos does a new one for sensitive stomach, they are hard, made for gnawing but base is of rice. They do a few like this. They even do a veg pig's ear!
