Today was my first attempt at a full Trec. I had done an indoor one a few months a go but this was a lot different.
I was a bit nervous after walking the course last night but I figured I had to stop flapping and just enjoy.
I had been put with an unknown partner. A 15 year old girl (Anyone under 16 has to have a partner) I have to admit I had reservations about how much fun a sulky teenager would be. LOL. But, I needn't have worried she was a total star and we got on like a house on fire. (She was dreading being put with a miserable old "fuddy duddy" who wouldn't want to go out of walk)
The event was well organised and ran by a happy jolly team (Big thank you going out to the Cornwall Trec Group, zebedee and the gang).
To start with we had to do the "CP" Control of Paces.
We had to canter 150m as slow as we possibly can without breaking in to a trot. (S is pretty good at this) and then walk the same distance in the other direction walking as fast as we can. (Again, I think we do OK here as S is a biiig horse and he covers the ground with not much effort).
This section went smoothly for both of us. Very well indeed considering J (My partner) was on her pony who is rising 5.
Then we had to move on to the P.T.V.
This was the line up of obstacles and how we did.
The Corridor - In trot and clear
S-Bend - Walked and clear
Cross country Jump - clear
Cross Country jump - clear
Very steep downhill incline - walk and clear
Low branches - walked (I could barely fit under this overhanging branch. LOL)
Very steep uphill incline - cantered - clear
Cross Country Jump - clear
Rein Back - started off brilliantly and on the last step I must have unbalanced him and he stepped out of the corridor.
Gate - Clear
Trailer - No problem
Inhand ditch - clear
Immobility - I nicely parked him so he could check out the view across the valley which he rather liked
So he stayed still for ages whilst I stayed outside the area. LOL
Mount - clear
Finish - Tadaaaaa. Big pats. What a good boy!!
Then me and my partner joined up for the P.O.R. (Orienteering on horseback) This was 16km and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We got lost once but luckily we only went 100m too far when we realised we should have turned right!! Phew!!
It was mainly over tracks, country lanes, gravelly tracks, stony tracks etc. I was a bit worried as to how S's feet would hold out as he is unshod but he stomped home and there was barely any wear. Phew!! Oh the course was very hilly, but this is Cornwall so everything is hilly. LOL.
We arrived back at the finish all in one piece, having had lots of fun and laughs.
We had a long wait until everyone was home and the prize giving was going to happen. I felt bad for S having to hang around when he truly deserved his field of grass after such a long day.
J, phoned me to tell me the good news. I have yet to see my sheet and my rosette
We learnt a lot today. This is a good job really as now we are knocked out of Newcomers and on to the next level.
For anyone thinking about trying Trec. Just go and do it. It is ever so relaxed and there are alsorts of different types of horses and people doing it.
I found it has made a refreshing change from Eventing and Dressage for both me and Stan.
I am so chuffed with my boy. He was a total star.
So can I hear a big cheer for Stan and Cobby the real stars of the day.
