Today was my first attempt at a full Trec. I had done an indoor one a few months a go but this was a lot different.

I was a bit nervous after walking the course last night but I figured I had to stop flapping and just enjoy.

I had been put with an unknown partner. A 15 year old girl (Anyone under 16 has to have a partner) I have to admit I had reservations about how much fun a sulky teenager would be. LOL. But, I needn't have worried she was a total star and we got on like a house on fire. (She was dreading being put with a miserable old "fuddy duddy" who wouldn't want to go out of walk)

The event was well organised and ran by a happy jolly team (Big thank you going out to the Cornwall Trec Group, zebedee and the gang).

To start with we had to do the "CP" Control of Paces.

We had to canter 150m as slow as we possibly can without breaking in to a trot. (S is pretty good at this) and then walk the same distance in the other direction walking as fast as we can. (Again, I think we do OK here as S is a biiig horse and he covers the ground with not much effort).

This section went smoothly for both of us. Very well indeed considering J (My partner) was on her pony who is rising 5.

Then we had to move on to the P.T.V.
This was the line up of obstacles and how we did.

The Corridor - In trot and clear
S-Bend - Walked and clear
Cross country Jump - clear
Cross Country jump - clear
Very steep downhill incline - walk and clear
Low branches - walked (I could barely fit under this overhanging branch. LOL)
Very steep uphill incline - cantered - clear
Cross Country Jump - clear
Rein Back - started off brilliantly and on the last step I must have unbalanced him and he stepped out of the corridor.
Gate - Clear
Trailer - No problem
Inhand ditch - clear
Immobility - I nicely parked him so he could check out the view across the valley which he rather liked

So he stayed still for ages whilst I stayed outside the area. LOL
Mount - clear
Finish - Tadaaaaa. Big pats. What a good boy!!

Then me and my partner joined up for the P.O.R. (Orienteering on horseback) This was 16km and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We got lost once but luckily we only went 100m too far when we realised we should have turned right!! Phew!!

It was mainly over tracks, country lanes, gravelly tracks, stony tracks etc. I was a bit worried as to how S's feet would hold out as he is unshod but he stomped home and there was barely any wear. Phew!! Oh the course was very hilly, but this is Cornwall so everything is hilly. LOL.

We arrived back at the finish all in one piece, having had lots of fun and laughs.

We had a long wait until everyone was home and the prize giving was going to happen. I felt bad for S having to hang around when he truly deserved his field of grass after such a long day.

J, phoned me to tell me the good news. I have yet to see my sheet and my rosette

We learnt a lot today. This is a good job really as now we are knocked out of Newcomers and on to the next level.

For anyone thinking about trying Trec. Just go and do it. It is ever so relaxed and there are alsorts of different types of horses and people doing it.

I found it has made a refreshing change from Eventing and Dressage for both me and Stan.

I am so chuffed with my boy. He was a total star.

So can I hear a big cheer for Stan and Cobby the real stars of the day.

Now that sounds like a lot of fun!
Flippen heck i couldnt have done half of that!

Well done, have you got any pics?

Dont really understand LT but this sounds so much fun.

Just reading your post about TREC sounds like so much fun and different from all the high pressure stuff that all the other "olympic" disciplines put on sport horses...

Congrats to you and Stan

Nooo, I haven't got a camera at the moment. Not even a phone camera

I found it all very confusing. Eventing, Dressage etc. I can remember everything I need. I know what happens and when. This is a totally new experience but as I said, very refreshing.

Go for it. I can not see why anyone wouldn't enjoy it. Unless you hate riding. lol.

You can't get eliminated you just end up with less points. (That kind of makes it more relaxing).
smile.gif

Wouldn't be doing it for the points...

My boy is a very active and full o' beans 17 year old eventer who's done and seen it all and sometimes I think he would like more action than he's actually getting
wink.gif
. But vet's orders is no more big jumps. Would TREC be an alternative ? The old boy is a real "showman" but I don't want anymore strenuous or too phisically demanding work for him. And the rider not a "young filly" anymore either...

The jumps are not demanding at all.
So long as he is still up for a long ride.
I found myself giggling loads around the PTV bit. I think it was a mixture of him feeling all happy and me feeling like a child.
Do you have a local Trec group near you?
smile.gif

I'd have to look into it. TREC is quite popular in France but not at my yard. They're all into SJ.

How long are the rides at beginner level ? The old boy's quite a dude though.

Vet says he's still got the heart of an athlete
wink.gif
but I'm always worried about asking too much of him as I want him to be around a long long time

We did 16km today. It wasn't a race though. We cantered in places, trotted in others and walked quite a lot. We weren't aiming for a time, we were just having fun.

I would try and meet up with a local Trec group and have a nose in to the sport.

My OH fancies this it sounds such fun.
Well done on your success, this was a good description of what trec actually is, the only bit I reckon we would stuggle with is the stand still bit, do you drop a rope on the floor as if they are tied up or just command them to stay there?
There is a new one about to start in Chagford 6 miles away, so who knows, we may get to see you..

On this occasion it was purely luck. Something caught his eye just at the right time and he stared off in to the distance as I stepped away from him.

When we did the indoor Trec he followed me out of the area. I got a zero!! PMSL!!

I really think your OH should go and have a go. It really is fun. I was giggling to myself all around the PTV bit. I felt like a kid again.
