Paired up with my dad and his cob last weekend for some indoor TREC that was on locally for a bit of fun. Fair to say, as usual C impressed! We were 5th in the pairs with C having strong individual scores. Only 1x 0 for the rein back (we learnt it the day before, and it was responsive and polite just kicked the poles too many times!). We trotted most things other than the narrow corridor for obvious reasons, had one look at the bridge before walking over it, straight over the 'ditch', wasn't flustered by any of the maypole/neck reining/low branches situations, got full marks for immobility and was generally a star. TREC suits small ponies...

I would definitely recommend it for youngsters- though the skills may sometimes seem a bit handy pony, ultimately a horse that's good a TREC is good at general life! We know the things to work on for next time now :)

Off this afternoon back to the current day job for him to ponies UK winter championships, in the novice championship and also doing the RI amateur classes! He really is proving a fantastic all rounder!

Well done :)

Trec is great fun and I do it with my mare but we always lose points on the maypole as I can't convince her it's not electric fencing out to zap her :'(

Looks great!

Me and my boy did a TREC training session last Sunday - it was good fun! And we've signed up for a competition!

I think it's great for introducing them to different things and adding a bit of variety whether in the arena or out and about :) And people are quite happy for you to turn up to sessions or comps and 'have a go'.

I do think it suits ponies well but me and my 16.2hh beast are having a laugh with it :D

Well done - those low branches were very kind!

Trec is great fun and the horses seem to really enjoy it, and the training.

I've been doing trec this winter with my 'speshul' horse. A great way to get him exposed to things. We're generally rubbish and come last, but we enjoy it.
Loads of 0's . He won't do low branches - they touched his ears once so that's a no now ( he's 16.3 so is difficult to get them high enough, especially when he puts his head up) . The bridge is ok and tarpaulin a bit hit and miss.
But he has improved even when his scores haven't.

It took me several days to convince my horse that he could go under the "low branches" when I was teaching him. I put a bamboo cane on the top of some jump stands and his reaction was "I can't jump that! - not going near it." By leading him and bribing him with pony nuts I managed to get him to go underneath with his head down and progressed so he would go underneath with me on top.

Can't understand why anyone should be sniffy about handy-pony exercises - they are fab- the ponies are learning lifeskills at the same time as schooling exercises/transitions, movements etc. what could be better? - and they 'get the point' of doing say a halt by a cone to pick something up, or a half-circle with a maypole..............

lovely pony OP, looks as if you are having loads of fun with him.
