I am getting my new cob on Sunday and want to get him kitted out asap. I am planning on getting him a treeless saddle, but do these need fitting by a professional?

I personally can’t imagine why they would but cobs owner (we are sort of sharing, she forked out to buy him, I am buying his tack and keeping him) is convinced that I need to call in a saddler. I haven’t that much experience of treeless saddles but am pretty certain they are a case of one size fits all?

Personally I would get it checked as treeless saddles don't suit all horses

I agree with Zalacca, and would never spend that kind of money without making sure my horse was comfortable first.

I would advise you to have a saddler out to check all is order At approx £30 its well worth it, he may recommend something else as ideal for the horse.

Personally I don't like treeless saddles anyway, riding position feels wrong to me......

Enjoy your new horse!!

Fitting a treeless is not as precise or exact as a treed saddle, and many people don't get them fitted, but obviously a check is best.
We have a Torsion and would now not use anything else if it fits, as it is such a lovely saddle. Horse goes so much better than he ever did in any treed saddle too.

Not all horses/riders do get on with them though.

I would get it checked. I had a treeless saddle for Daisy that I thought fitted and so did the first saddler that looked at it. It wasn't until the second saddler looked at it that he found a problem. Its not a route I'd go down again. I now have a beautiful saddle with Flair and love it.

You don't necessarily need a professional to fit a treeless and most saddle fitters would only make an educated guess anyway as you don't fit them like a treed saddle.

Saying that, if you do buy a treeless make sure you go for a good brand and there may be 'trained' agents that can come out to help fit the saddle to the horse.

Treeless saddles are not for every horse and one size does not fit all, there are many different types out there so have a look around.

I would say you definitely need to get it fitted, by a saddler who specialises in that particular brand. They aren't cheap and the cost of a fitting is minimal in comparison. My friend had her Torsion on trial before buying, which you can't do if you just buy it randomly. Also, I stupidly agreed to try it on my horse, with some horrendous consequences (it triggered collapsing episodes but that's another story and it wasnt just the treeless, but it certainly didn't help!).
