I'll be in Central Edinburgh during the Easter Holidays and a friend who lives there would like to go riding during that time.

Can anyone recommend a trekking centre, or at a push; a riding school, with a decent reputation around Edinburgh?

We'll be relying purely on public transport so something in the middle of nowhere isn't an option. Preferably within an hour away too.

Thanks very much :)

There is an Icelandic riding centre somewhere near West Linton. Its called Pentland Icelandics or something. You might find it on the web.

This closed years ago :(

There is Tower Farm which is in Edinburgh, Lasswade just outside.. both easy to get to by bus not sure what they are like for trekking though...

both of these are riding schools, not sure what either are like for trekking though cant imagine they will be that great, harelaw in longniddry is a five minute walk away from the train station, lovely beaches for a two hour ride if an expierianced rider, lovely irish draught horses, and irish ponies too the other hacks are nice see lots of wildlife

In Edinburgh Tower Farm Riding Stables is probably your best bet if you have to rely on buses, the hacking is up the braids with vews across Edinburgh and its really easy to get to, for buses your looking for number 37, 47, 7 buses will get you up to Liberton by the Bank of Scotland then its just a walk along Liberton Drive.
Lasswade Riding Stables has good hacking in the local countryside round where I live but I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, they don't have the best reputation!
Harelaw at Longniddry seems good though not been there but its on a main road so would imagine there is a bus that goes by there and riding looks like it'll be good seeing as its near the beach.
The place I would have very strongly recommended is not accessible by public transport unfortunately as they are out by North Berwick at Seacliff Stables, if you were to somehow manage to get a car then I would absolutely say Seacliff has the best riding in the Lothians all virtually off road on tracks, fields and beaches and occasional private roads.

I wouldn't touch either Lasswade or Tower Farm but can highly reccomend Harelaw, went with my sister and a couple of friends, 3 of us are horseowners but we had a complete blast galloping along the beach.
Unfortunately the weather wasn't great but it did mean we didn't have to jump small children with buckets and spades.

Def go for the Exmoor Pony Trekking!! They'll pick you up from the bus stop and take you out to the field. It's great fun and really good value for the length of ride you get (about £30 for 3 hours!)
