trekking/riding in cumbria?

Hiya all,

I'm off up to the lake district for a week with my parents the week after next and am looking into somewhere to do a morning/days ride while I'm there. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions/recommendations/places to avoid?

I'm an experienced rider so I'd like something with a decent chance to canter etc, not just pottering about on ploddy ponies (much as I love a cute pony!).

Anyone got any ideas? :)

I haven't been, but I think Bigland Hall Equestrian do some quite good hacks......just google Bigland Hall Equestrian and their website will come up. Not too far from Windermere providing you have a car. Quite pricey though! There is also one called Crooked Birch. Again never been as I have a horse so wouldn't need to, but their website is www.crookedbirch.co.uk. They look quite a bit cheaper, but they will be a bit further away from Windermere. Looks like they will both do some fast work if that's what you're looking for.
 
Would highly reccommend Cumbrian Heavy Horses. I went up for a beach ride in April. I rode Mani, he was super duper and the others looked equally as fun! I'm definitely heading back there next time I'm up that way :) Enjoy your time up there-I can't wait to go again!
 
Last time I went up that way I went to Murthwaite Green for a beach ride http://www.murthwaitegreen.co.uk/ If you can ride they have some lovely horses, all cobs that know and love their jobs, and you can have a lovely fast canter down the sand. Try and get Apache, or Father Ted, as they are the whizziest! :D

I'd also recommend trying to get Apache! :D They are all great though, I love how they go from a stand still halt, spin around and into gallop, mad considering some of them LOOK like plod-a-longs! Really enjoyable and well worth the money!

I love Ted's little 'boing boing boing, sidle sidle sidle' move when you hold him back a bit at the start to give the others a lead, followed by WHOOOOOOOOOOSH as he overtakes the lot!:D

And yet I took my entirely inexperienced little sister along, and they gave her such a lovely lesson and such a beautifully mannered pony that she was cantering on the beach by the end of the day - and I still got my mad hoon:)
 
Spudlet- Yeah Big Ted is great! Must go back again this year if I can! I'd definately go on the beach ride btw! I just thought I'd also say take a waterproof there, even if the weather is sunny! So unpredictable, I set off in gleaming sunshime, returned in heavy showers!
